Position Summary:

At SBELIH, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supporting to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen.

Job Duties & Essential Functions

Assess the patient’s condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients.

Develop a written individualized care plan which includes teaching needs and discharge planning.

Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.

Administer medication.

Practice infection control and participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.

Assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients. Communicates changes in patient’s condition and questions regarding patient care to Charge RN/Clinician.

Develops and maintains current written plan of care for assigned patients. Sets priorities to meet the patient’s needs. Sets patient goals and priorities with the patient and/or family.

Provides document evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching. Ensures that patient education and instructions are consistent with that of the physician or designee.

Communicates and works effectively with other staff and other departments.

Participates in unit or hospital-based quality assurance activities or committees to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession at SBELIH.

Required Experience & Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse required.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required.

Telemetry/Critical Care experience mandatory.

Trauma Nurse Core Course (“TNCC”) required within three (3) to six (6) months of hire.

One (1) – two (2) years emergency department/critical care experience required.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

Bachelors of Science in nursing degree preferred. (Under New York State Education Law 6905 – all Registered Nurses licensed on or after December 19, 2017, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree within 10 years of their initial RN licensure to maintain their ability to practice in the State of New York. Failure to meet this legal requirement may impact your employment status.)

Nursing specialty credential preferred. (Critical Care, CCRN, emergency nursing CEN, pediatric emergency nursing CPEN).

Physical Demands

Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies.

Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning and physical interventions, if needed.

Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment.

Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care.

Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.

Proving physical support in restraining or de‑escalating patients if necessary.

Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.

Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment.

Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.

Capacity to manage high‑stress situations with clear decision‑making and physical capacity.

Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.

Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis situation.

These physical demands are tailored to the nature of the job, which requires a high level of alertness, physical engagement, and responsiveness, especially when dealing with patients in acute psychiatric distress.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBELIH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Pre‑Employment Requirements:

Successfully complete pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services.

Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.

Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen.

Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre‑employment screenings.

Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
