Surgical Assistant - Certified

Sign on Bonus:

Overview:
Sentara Norfolk General’s Heart Hospital is a comprehensive Level 1 Trauma center located in Norfolk, VA. The Cardiac Surgery program operates high-volume, complex open‑heart CABG, valve, aortic, and structural cases (including TAVR) and serves as the regional center for ECMO/MCS, heart transplant, and aortic dissection care.
Responsibilities:
The Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team and assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, setting up tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization, cauterizing bleeding vessels, suturing and closing incisions, instilling medications, applying surgical dressings, splints, and casts. Additional intra‑operative duties include ensuring equipment readiness and maintaining patient safety. Pre‑operative and post‑operative tasks support overall patient care, and effective interdisciplinary communication facilitates optimal outcomes.
Education:
Surgical Assistant Trade School Degree (required).
Certification / Licensure:
Virginia Surgical Assistant License (required)
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (required)
Experience:
Cardiac experience strongly preferred.
