Job Role Summary The Trauma Registrar creates and maintains clinical and statistical data as required by the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center for all inpatient and selected outpatient trauma victims. This position abstracts data elements required for entry into the computerized trauma registry, retrospectively and concurrently.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Creates and maintains clinical and statistical data as required by the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center for all inpatient and selected outpatient trauma victims
Abstracts data elements required for entry into the computerized trauma registry, retrospectively and concurrently
Maintains files by patient name and date for all patients diagnosed with traumatic injury after December 1, 1987
Maintains a 95% accuracy rate when performing all duties
Assists with creating monthly statistical reports in accordance with established guidelines
Researches through additional data collection systems for pertinent information for accurate data collection
Assists in providing a secure data storage device
Performs routine backups of Collector and other associated programs
Scans current data base for errors
Originates, creates and stores queries and reports on an as-needed-basis
Provides reports in a concise and thorough format
Communicates regularly with the Trauma Program Manager
Assists clinical personnel in research projects and continuous quality improvement activities as related to the trauma registry data
Job Requirements
Associate's degree in Medical Records Technology
Minimum of three years working with medical records
Certified Coding Specialist or at least 4 years of relevant health care experience (i.e., LPN, Paramedic) with computer skills may also be considered
Completion of the American Trauma Society's Trauma Registrar Course or equivalent by the Indiana State Department of Health Division of Trauma and Injury Prevention; and the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine's Injury Scaling Course within 12 months of hire
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of trauma statistical reports, performance improvement and injury prevention
Proficiency in the use of ICD-9/10 coding, AIS, Tri-Code, ISS and AAAM Coding
Evidence of advanced computer skills including, but not limited to, database maintenance and development; Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access; ability to utilize statistical computer software
Knowledge of advanced medical terminology
Computer literate and proficient in using and coding word processing software
Knowledge of and proficiency in using ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding system, Glasgow Coma and Revised Trauma Scoring Scales systems
Knowledge of advanced medical terminology
Familiarization with anatomy
Skills in filing (alpha/numeric, terminal digit), data entry, basic clerical duties
Effective oral and written skill necessary for corresponding with all levels of hospital personnel
