Communications Specialist – Intermediate
Location: Nashville, TN (Hybrid — Must Currently Reside in Tennessee)

About the Role The client is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented Communications Specialist to support the development of engaging, culturally relevant communications that inspire positive health behaviors. This role will work closely with TDH’s Tobacco Use Prevention & Control Program and the Chronic Disease Section to create impactful content for Tennesseans and advance the mission of improving community health statewide.
The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller with excellent writing skills, creative thinking, and the ability to translate complex public health information into accessible messaging for diverse audiences. This position is best suited for someone who is collaborative, flexible, and passionate about public health communications.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, write, edit, and manage content across multiple platforms, including websites, newsletters, social media, presentations, print materials, and reports.
Transform public health information into clear, engaging, and motivating messaging for varied audiences.
Create and maintain content that meets digital accessibility standards (ADA/WCAG 2.1 AA and Revised Section 508).
Support the planning, development, and execution of public health and marketing campaigns, including messaging, creative concepting, deliverables tracking, and timeline management.
Assist with media placement logistics: coordinate with vendors, research appropriate channels, manage campaign deliverables, and ensure accurate distribution of assets.
Monitor and track campaign performance; support data reporting and strategy adjustments to increase reach and impact.
Collaborate with internal teams, subject matter experts, and community partners to produce accurate, inclusive, and culturally sensitive communications.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
2–5 years of experience in communications, ideally within public health, nonprofit, or government environments
Proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (portfolio with design samples required)
Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills
Strong organizational skills with proven ability to meet deadlines in a hybrid or remote setting
Cultural competency and understanding of inclusive communication practices
Current residence in Tennessee
Preferred
Familiarity with digital accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA / Section 508)
Experience supporting health-focused outreach or behavior-change campaigns
Knowledge of campaign analytics, tracking, and reporting
2–3 writing samples (articles, campaign content, newsletters, storytelling pieces)
3–5 design samples (social graphics, infographics, layouts, campaign materials)
