Job Overview Nationwide seeks a Senior Consultant, Risk Analytics Researcher to lead research projects in catastrophe modeling, risk analysis, and data science. The role blends meteorological expertise with advanced analytics to support business outcomes and strategic decision‑making across finance, underwriting, and product development.

Purpose Lead research and development of catastrophe models focusing on hurricanes and severe convective storms. Apply hybrid modeling (stochastic category + ML/statistics) to improve accuracy, evaluate vendor models, and integrate geospatial analytics.

Core Skills & Technical Requirements

Strong background in meteorology/atmospheric science, especially hurricanes and severe convective storms.

Analysis of historical and real‑time weather data (NOAA) for event simulation and loss estimation.

Geospatial data integration using GIS tools and spatial analysis.

Proficiency in R and/or Python for data analysis and modeling.

Solid understanding of relational databases (SQL).

Experience with catastrophe modeling platforms (Verisk, RMS) and insurance risk modeling.

Knowledge of claims and underwriting processes.

Strong research skills, including uncertainty quantification and advanced statistical modeling.

Education & Experience

Ph.D. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field; or Master’s with 5–10 years of relevant experience.

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and publish findings.

Insurance risk modeling experience a plus.

Key Responsibilities

Research and implement financial engineering, data science, and statistical techniques for risk management.

Create and test risk limits to guide asset allocation, risk transfer, and product growth.

Own all facets of complex quantitative modeling; ensure alignment with industry standards.

Consult and collaborate to ensure model assumptions, processes, and outputs are clearly communicated.

Review and analyze model output to identify limitations and mitigate them with corrective methods.

Document model rationale, assumptions, and business continuity.

Develop innovative solutions to support strategic business problems.

Act as technology owner for risk analytics.

Reporting Relationships Reports to the Risk/Actuarial leader.

Typical Skills and Experiences Undergraduate studies in finance, accounting, economics, statistics, mathematics or related field required. Graduate‑level studies with advanced degree highly desirable. Experience includes seven or more years in financial risk modeling or actuarial functions. Strong understanding of machine learning, stochastic processes, Monte Carlo simulations, sampling methods and other statistical techniques applicable to specialized risk modeling.
