Pay Range Base pay: $53,764.00 per year – $85,138.00 per year.
Position Information The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is hiring a permanent Food Inspector 1 or Trainee to conduct food safety inspections of food establishments in Schenectady County, NY. The responsibilities include preventing fraud, adulteration, and misrepresentation in the processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale of food and food products; educating food establishment operators on applicable laws and regulations; sampling food products to verify food safety controls, product labeling, and contents; and issuing written notices, letters, and reports citing violations and enforcement actions.
This is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week position, Monday through Friday, that may be based from home and requires travel within an assigned region, including occasional overnight out‑of‑state trips for training.
Travel Requirements Applicants must have, at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and access to a motor vehicle when necessary. Extensive travel is required.
Minimum Qualifications (NY HELPS)
120 semester credit hours, including 24 credit hours in chemistry, microbiology, food quality control, epidemiology, entomology, food technology, food science, food processing technology, food sanitation, dairy science, biology, environmental sanitation, environmental health, human physiology, genetics, animal science, nutrition/dietetics, or medical sciences.
OR 60 semester credit hours, including 24 credit hours in the same fields, plus two years of experience with environmental health protection/sanitation of food establishments or quality control of food products at a wholesale food manufacturing facility.
Alternate Qualification Paths Applicants may qualify through various transfer or 70.* qualifications that include prior service, required credit hours, experience, and examination scores. Details can be found on the NYS Civil Service website.
Salary & Career Path The starting salary for the Food Inspector Trainee 1 is $53,764 per year. Upon successful completion of the first year of the traineeship, the appointee advances to Trainee 2 with a salary of $59,994. After the second year, the candidate advances to Food Inspector 1 at SG‑18 with a salary of $66,951, without further examination.
Permanent appointment as Food Inspector 1 includes participation in the New York State Performance Evaluation Program, with potential performance advances up to $85,138 per year.
