1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking an experienced Grid Systems Solution Architect to provide utility grid operations modernization consulting services for our electric utility clients. The selected candidate will join the Enterprise System & Integration team, which focuses on delivering high‑value Enterprise Solution Services through leading technologies. The grid operations architect must possess strong electric utility business and technology acumen and will provide professional consulting on SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, DERMS and related systems. Candidates must also demonstrate strong project execution capability, leadership and collaboration skills, excellent communication, a focus on continuous improvement and enterprise innovation, and meticulous attention to detail. The architect is responsible for strategic guidance, research, planning and best‑practice recommendations to our clients’ executive leaders, helping them align investment decisions with long‑term vision.
This position focuses on grid automation support services, emphasizing SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, DERMS and execution of grid modernization programs for electric utility clients. The architect will lead efforts to identify and deliver services that support grid modernization assessments, technology roadmaps, software upgrades and implementations, emphasizing teamwork, customer commitment and industry best practices.
Responsibilities
Apply industry experience and leading practices to architect, design, develop, and implement SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS solutions to support complex business requirements.
Utilize in‑depth knowledge of SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS to support commissioning, testing, and deployment.
Provide field support, troubleshooting, and project coordination to enhance and maintain SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS, including leading commissioning efforts and field data verification for advanced distribution applications such as FLISR, VVO, and DER dispatch.
Lead or assist with program estimating, planning, and budgeting, and be accountable for program/project delivery execution.
Support analysis, design, build, test, triage defects, configuration, and deployment activities. Ability to support Enterprise Program Management using Waterfall and Agile methods.
Ensure successful completion of projects within budget, scope, quality, and business objectives, superimposing overall project status and milestones.
Maintain overall quality of project deliverables.
Act as application and solution architect for technical architecture teams.
Assist or lead business process design activities to produce complete application requirements (functional, quality, integration, and security).
Collaborate with application designers to create high‑level integration solutions and map data between applications.
Identify cross‑application interfaces (business events or messages) from activity and data flow diagrams.
Validate that application requirements meet business process needs, scope, and consistency.
Validate that integration solutions and architecture designs utilize appropriate integration components.
Lead or assist with high‑level project communications and status reporting to the executive team.
Act as central point of contact for all project interdependencies, internally and externally.
Assist with timely development and implementation of all system stages.
Leverage project execution experience to influence processes and quality assurance/control protocols.
Ensure compliance with company and safety policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, computer science, information technology, or related field preferred; applicable experience may substitute.
Minimum 7 years of experience in enterprise or operations architecture strategies, integration solutions, and services leveraging diverse platforms.
Preferred: 5 years working in the electric utility industry or equivalent.
Expertise in enterprise architecture and integration, including data, cloud, middleware, communications, and related practices.
Experience with large‑scale enterprise transformation projects and standard industry technologies.
Experience with electric utility operational systems (OMS, DMS, ADMS, AMI, distribution automation, DER) is preferred.
Strong ability to influence or lead project execution.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with leading‑edge applications, operations technology, and industry‑standard tools.
Experience with multiple project execution methodologies, including Waterfall and Agile.
Experience developing executive‑level technology assessments, roadmap strategies for utilities industry clients.
