Description POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Heavy Equipment Foreman, the Heavy Equipment Operator is a nonexempt position under FLSA. This position may perform construction and/or maintenance on designated sections of roads to a level that is safe for the driving public, ensure proper drainage of said roads, and perform grass, weed and brush control within their designated section. This employee assists in snow and ice removal during inclement weather. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):

Operates light and heavy equipment including, but not limited to, loader, motor grader, mower, roller, tractor, backhoe, chain saw, sheep foot, highloader, water trucks, bobtail, winch truck, broom, dump truck, semi-tractor and trailer, implement tractor; and others. Performs necessary repairs to roads, ditches and culverts; Installs drainage structures; Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather; Installs drainage structures; Performs maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment; Places rip-rap and other erosion control material; Performs maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment; Reports equipment problems to the shop; Performs road and bridge construction and maintenance work repairing guardrails, mowing ditches, installing and maintaining culverts, filling washouts, and removing brush and debris from around bridges; Maintains a safe work site; Regular and predictable attendance required; Ensures positive public relations with public and staff; works with public to explain project details, answer questions, provide timelines for completion. Must have (or obtain with 60 days of employment) and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements. Must have and maintain a clean driving record for this position. A “clean” record is defined: No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (such as, but not limited to, DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) traffic infractions (such as, but not limited to, speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one year old. Maintains daily labor and equipment records; Transfers equipment to the job site; Performs traffic control activities; Assists section patrol workers with their district; Assists other departments as needed. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

Employee shall have the mechanical ability to operate and maintain multiple pieces of heavy equipment, including a motor grader, backhoe, loader, roller, excavator, etc. Employee shall have basic mathematical skills, ability to communicate effectively, read maps, and work from verbal or written instructions. Problem Solving

The work involves routine related tasks that require special knowledge regarding proper road maintenance techniques, reading grade elevations and understanding construction drawings and plans. Employee encounters issues relating to damage to roads, weather conditions, and obtaining the proper equipment to make necessary repairs on a regular basis. Decision Making: This person must have the ability to identify and correct road surface deficiencies and provide safe driving conditions. In most cases, an employee takes the obvious course of action, but in some situations different options must be considered. Employee is directly responsible for departmental equipment and resources, but does not participate in the annual budget process. Employee is responsible for daily record keeping for cost accounting purposes. Machines/Equipment Used (not an all-inclusive list):

A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, or graduation from a vocational school is preferred. Minimum of three years heavy road construction work experience, operating heavy equipment, or similar related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months to one year of employment.
