Under direct supervision, performs a variety of basic and routine patient care and clerical duties to assist medical providers in the care and treatment of patients. The primary function is to room patients and facilitate provider schedules. Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of one’s actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs, builds rapport and cooperative relationships, and responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolve problems.

Knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures; demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice.

Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to medication administration, infection prevention, fall prevention, and procedural time-outs.

Performs appropriate basic, routine and regular delegated medical functions within scope of practice (e.g., vision screening, ear irrigations, hearing tests, hematocrit, tonometry, EKG tests, specimen collection, urine cultures).

Supports physicians and other medical providers during routine examination and treatment procedures by attending patients and providing necessary supplies and instruments.

Performs routine clerical and reception duties, such as completing patient visit records, maintaining departmental logs, answering telephones, checking in patients, and scheduling appointments.

Assists in orienting and training new employees, transporting equipment or patients, stocking shelves, taking inventories, and ordering supplies.

Demonstrates computer literacy for charting and reviewing in an automated medical record while complying with regulatory requirements and standards of care.

Administers specific medications to identified patient age groups in the designated departments.

Performs duties with excellence, enthusiasm, great service orientation, demonstrates courteous behaviors, and maintains a safe and healthy work environment.

Prepares examination and treatment rooms for use by physicians and other medical providers by cleaning, stocking, arranging supplies, and using sterile technique when required.

Communicates to physicians and other medical providers the appointment schedule and special instructions, greets and escorts patients to examination or treatment rooms, and keeps all parties informed of status and delays.

Interviews patients to determine reason for visit; takes vital signs and records information in the patient’s medical record.

Instructs or assists patients in preparation for scheduled procedures and provides routine verbal and written instructions (e.g., use of crutches, cast care).

Basic Qualifications

Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program and a minimum of 120 hours of clinical experience.

Copy of diploma and transcripts from program required, or a letter from school attesting to successful completion of the KPCO Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program.

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.

Additional Requirements

Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus, and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs.
