Health Unit Coordinator - West Allis

Base pay range
$19.45/hr - $29.20/hr
Responsibilities
Perform clerical and system coordination for nursing units. Monitor and update orders and schedules for diagnostic and therapeutic services. Ensure accuracy and frequent updates of unit census, patient information, and level of care. Coordinate all nursing unit communications and activities. Act as receptionist, greeting and directing patients, visitors, physicians, and other health care providers.
Coordinate tests and treatments with and between various departments for patients on nursing units. Maintain working knowledge of functions and services offered by all diagnostic and treatment departments to facilitate scheduling of tests and treatments.
Facilitate communications required to support patient care, including multiple‑line telephone, unit/site paging, and hospital information system. Screen incoming telephone calls. Monitor department office equipment and troubleshoot minor problems. Arrange repair of major malfunctions.
Maintain working knowledge of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and other computer systems for ordering patient and unit supplies and equipment. Process daily patient charges and related procedures through the system.
Compile necessary chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges, and expirations. Obtain appropriate copies of medical records for transfers to nursing homes and other health care facilities.
Verify medical records contain complete and accurate patient demographic information, patient identification, and registration in the medical record, including appropriate level of care.
Establish and maintain positive customer relations and contribute to a harmonious work environment. Quickly and courteously acknowledge requests, respond to call lights, demonstrate proper phone etiquette, and foster communication between the health care team.
Scheduled Hours This position is 15‑2230 shift. Every other weekend and some holidays required. Potential to flex start times based on department needs.
Licenses & Certifications None Required.
Degrees High School Graduate, or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).
Required Functional Experience No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic computer skills. Excellent oral and written communications. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities/workloads. High level of attention to detail essential. Certification Addendum: Team members will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g., DNV, CARF or others).
