Major Responsibilities
Uses respiratory therapy processes to support assessment of patients utilizing pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph, hemodynamic values, laboratory values, and correlates blood gases and electrolytes.
Operates specialized ventilators in critical and non‑critical care venues and assists physicians with procedures.
Provides medication treatments and therapies per physician orders and/or patient‑driven respiratory protocols.
Cleans, maintains, and ensures proper functionality of equipment; troubleshoots and identifies need for service or repair.
Educates patients in purpose, technique, self‑care, goals of therapy, and disease management.
Facilitates clinical problem solving and collaborates with other departments.
Adapts to policies and procedures for various service areas under physician direction.
Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills; provides clear patient handoff.
Promotes a culture of safety and reports safety events and near misses promptly.
Teaches, educates, and precepts new teammates, orients, and students.
Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the lifespan and assesses age‑specific needs.
Licensure, Registration, and Certification Required
Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state of practice.
Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by NBRC within 12 months OR active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential (if received before Jan 1, 2019).
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.
Additional site‑specific requirements per Education/Certification Addendum.
Education Required
Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program, with a minimum of an associate degree.
Experience Required
No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Effective organizational, interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
Problem solving and decision making for patient care and equipment use.
Proficient computer skills, use of email and EMR systems.
Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
Human relation skills and ability to develop rapport.
Initiative and collaborative teamwork.
Time management with ability to multitask and prioritize in a busy environment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Operates all necessary equipment.
Lifts 50 lb from knee to waist and occasionally from floor to waist.
Lifts 40 lb at waist height across distances.
Lifts 20 lb from waist to overhead.
Pushing/pulling with 30 lb of force for long distances occasionally.
Stand‑pivot transfer from bed to chair.
Sliding transfer of a 150 lb person on a sheet across 2 ft with a second person.
Uses safe body mechanics at all times.
