Job Summary The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection accurately, efficiently, and with compassion. This role ensures proper patient identification, labeling, handling, and processing of all specimens in accordance with established protocols and quality standards. The Phlebotomist works collaboratively with clinical and laboratory staff to support patient care and maintain a safe, professional environment. Essential Job Functions Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, and specimen collection following proper procedures and safety standards. Verify patient identification and accurately label all specimens. Prepare and process specimens for testing or transport to reference laboratories. Maintain accurate records and logs for specimen collection and test orders. Monitor phlebotomy supplies and ensure work areas are properly stocked and organized. Follow universal precautions and infection control policies to ensure patient and staff safety. Provide professional, courteous, and compassionate care to all patients. Participate in quality control, compliance, and training activities as required. Assist with general clinic or laboratory duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements Excellent attention to detail and accuracy Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures Work and Education Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required an accredited phlebotomy program required. Experience: one year of phlebotomy preferred; new graduates may be considered. Certification: National or state phlebotomy certification preferred (ASCP, NHA, NCCT, etc) Americans with Disabilities Specification Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Performs complex and varied tasks requiring independent knowledge and its application to a variety of situations. Regular clinical exposure to biological hazards should be expected. Must comply with all safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Requires some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires frequent use of office equipment, such as copiers, computers, telephones and fax machines. Work requires hand dexterity for office machine operation, mobility to complete work, and sitting for extended periods> Must have the ability to lift 10 lbs; occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in a normal range for telephone contacts. Must be able to prioritize activities when faced with competing demands. Fast paced environment. Occasional evening or weekend work or overtime. Work is performed in an office setting. Contact with staff and physicians is frequent and interruptive. Involves contact with staff, patients, and the public. May view computer screens for long periods of time. Office is well-lit, well-ventilated, with adequate work space.
