Job Overview Phlebotomist I performs daily phlebotomy activities of the Patient Service Center (PSC) or In-office Phlebotomy (IOP) accurately and on time. The person in this position interacts with the client, patients, and other PathGroup personnel in a professional and courteous manner and performs with confidence, both the forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures. Essential Functions Greets customers appropriately. Treat all customers in a courteous manner. Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time. Collects specimens according to established procedures. Explains the venipuncture process and other specimen collection as required. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during, and after collection. Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Disposes of contaminated sharps as required. Completes requisitions accurately. Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer. Maintains accuracy and verifies handwritten orders and test(s) ordered, and obtains accurate billing information. Researches test/client information using lab computer systems. Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order. Packages specimens for transport. Stores specimens at required temperatures and ensures proper labeling and handling to maintain integrity. Maintains required records and documentation, including daily PSC/IOP Phlebotomy logs. Assists with monthly statistics and data compilation. Performs basic clerical duties and electronic data entry. Adheres to grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies; presents a neat and professional appearance at all times. Manages fluctuating patient flow and maintains professional communication with clients and coworkers. Answers telephone in a friendly and helpful manner, properly identifying the company and self. Performs duties independently and communicates pertinent information to supervisor or group leader for resolution. Contributes to a positive work climate and team effort; ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair; reports maintenance needs as required. Participates in periodic inventory counts and reports shortages. Uses proper PPE and follows all laboratory safety procedures and regulatory guidelines to protect patient and data confidentiality. Follows Corporate Compliance Program and all Corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
