Position Summary
Responsible for providing quality, customer-oriented laboratory services including registration, specimen collection, specimen processing, and other related duties. Performs venipuncture on patients. Maintains necessary equipment and supplies. Communicates effectively to all levels of laboratory staff and external contacts, and acts as a resource for phlebotomy technicians.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Performs venipunctures according to laboratory policies and procedures, including timed specimens, blood cultures, pediatric, and neonatal specimens.
Positively identifies all patients, verifies specimen identification, and labels specimens according to policies.
Receives and prepares laboratory specimens prior to analysis and testing, including study specimens, random and 24‑hour urines, and send‑out specimens.
Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, following all special handling instructions.
Optimizes routing of specimens and workbenches, prioritizing stat and routine specimens, and assists in pickup and delivery of specimens as needed.
Prepares all workstations with essential supplies.
Performs special procedures and waived point‑of‑care testing as requested by supervisors, assistants, or specialists.
Monitors and records daily temperatures and performs scheduled maintenance of equipment.
Completes logs for documentation and troubleshooting, and communicates to supervisor.
Acquires in‑depth knowledge of the LIS (SunQuest and EPIC) and performs basic LIS functions.
Performs patient registration functions in EPIC, including demographic updates, insurance validation, eligibility checks, and assigning medical record numbers.
Answers the telephone according to department policy and procedure.
Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including patient rights, providing excellent customer service and patient care.
Leverages hospital’s behavioral standards to support department and hospital mission and goals.
Manages time appropriately and meets BMC standards for attendance and punctuality.
Attends department meetings, delivers reports, and documents quality‑improvement activities.
Assists in training new lab support technicians and phlebotomy students.
Completes laboratory and hospital safety, compliance, and competency training, following infection‑control procedures.
Works with supervisors to update inventories, orders, and maintain supplies.
Participates in quality‑improvement activities, offering input for performance improvement and validating implemented solutions.
Recognizes and resolves technical and non‑technical problems, anticipating issues to avoid customer dissatisfaction.
Adapts to departmental changes, offering assistance to teammates, adjusting assignments, and fostering teamwork.
Education
High School Diploma or GED. Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
Job Requirements
ASCP Certified with more than five years of phlebotomy and/or specimen processing experience.
Phlebotomy certification or seven years of experience is required.
Five years or more of phlebotomy and specimen processing experience.

Knowledge And Skills
Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills for courteous, customer‑service interactions.
Technical competency with hospital computer systems such as Microsoft Office, EPIC patient registration, and LIS (Sunquest).
Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; strong attention to detail, organizational ability, and follow‑through.
Maintains strict confidentiality of personal/health‑sensitive information.
Effectively handles challenging situations and balances multiple priorities.
Compensation Range
$18.99 – $26.68. This range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications and may be adjusted based on education, experience, skill, and other factors. Additional compensation includes benefits, bonuses, and other perks.
