Responsibilities

Perform a wide range of services in clinic and hospital‑based laboratories with direct patient care, including venipuncture, post‑care of phlebotomy site, specimen processing, receiving desk duties, scheduling, waived point‑of‑care testing, assisting with difficult sticks, and other area‑specific services.

Maintain positive patient identification and prepare specimens for analysis; perform specimen collections and processing safely, accurately, and timely.

Prepare containers with reagents or specimens as required for ordered testing; store, ship, or transport to internal lab testing areas.

Perform order entry, verify patient collection data and special notations, and perform specialty collections when required.

Work independently and as part of a team; set priorities for specimen collection and workload.

Use standard precautions, infection control, and proper isolation techniques; use computer information systems daily.

Apply critical thinking to ensure all services comply with established SOPs by the Mayo Clinic Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

Demonstrate professional communication skills and telephone etiquette.

Maintain confidentiality and trustworthiness, managing stressful, difficult, and emotional situations calmly and with empathy.

Interact with patients, families, physicians, allied health staff, and visitors as a professional laboratory team member.

Perform other job‑related duties as assigned; work flexible hours and accommodate schedule changes.

Physical ability required for lifting, standing for long periods, and pushing and pulling lab equipment and patient wheelchairs.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required.

Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant program or equivalent, OR 3 years of work experience in phlebotomy/medical assisting, OR certification by a national association (ASCP, AMT, NHA) with 1 year of clinical experience.

Prior experience with phlebotomy, specimen processing, or a clinical laboratory preferred.

Familiarity with lifespan growth and development, basic anatomy, physiology, and basic medical terminology.

Adaptable, well organized, and professional interpersonal skills when working with physicians, co‑workers, and patients.

Accurate reading of specimen labels and adherence to SOPs.

General troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills regarding laboratory procedures.

Effective verbal and written communication; ability to distinguish colors.

Exercise caution to avoid potential exposure to hazards.

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position; this position does not participate in the F‑1 STEM OPT extension program.

Foreign trained lab personnel must provide a detailed equivalency high school evaluation at the applicant’s expense.

Weekend Schedule: 3:30am - 12:00 noon every other weekend.
