Summary The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Program is designed to hire transitioning service personnel, National Guard, Reserve, and Veteran corpsmen, combat medics, and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers. Candidates generally qualify based on U.S. Armed Forces experience or equivalent education. Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for Intermediate Care Technician for the Service Telehealth Service.

Base pay range $49,960.00/yr - $64,952.00/yr

Qualifications

Time‑In‑Grade Requirement for current federal employees: must have served 52 weeks at the GS‑6 level (or any occupation) within the past 52 weeks. Submit an SF‑50 that demonstrates this eligibility.

Applicable to former federal employees and those applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Specialized Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑6, including preparing and administering medications (various routes), performing medical interventions, and managing life‑threatening situations. Must demonstrate understanding of legal/ethical considerations, ability to record diagnostic signs, assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations, and support licensed personnel.

Education: One year of graduate education or internship directly related to the position at the next lower grade level, completed at an accredited institution. Copies of transcripts required.

Preferred Experience: Telehealth or experience in military medical roles such as Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, Medical Technician, or related specialties.

Duties

The incumbent assists licensed staff with delivery of care to patients with complex or potentially life‑threatening situations, both in person and via virtual visits.

Prepares patients for medical evaluation, sets up equipment, passes instruments, and provides treatment during visits.

Operates specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes.

Collects a wide range of specimens and prepares them for transfer to processing.

Observes patient status and informs licensed clinical staff of any changes in condition.

Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and uses an automatic external defibrillator once certified.

Performs vital sign monitoring, electrocardiogram (EKG), point‑of‑care testing, equipment and surgical instrumentation setup, treatments and interventions such as cryotherapy, incision and drainage, catheter insertion, wound care, specimen collection, and assisting with patient exams and screening.

Provides mental health care support: crisis intervention, behavioral/mental health screens, interviews, and observations.

Documents all actions and patient responses in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) through procedural notes, progress notes, screenings, photo‑documentation, and secure messaging.

Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm (hours may vary based on Veteran needs). The position is not virtual.
