Job Description Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission is Making Lives Better Through Transportation. A CDL permit is required upon hire. You must have your Class A and endorsements/restrictions CDL within 5 months following appointment. CDL Training for Iowa DOT employees is provided. Entry Level Driver Training is available if you do not already possess a Class A and required endorsements.
Location Sioux City – Within 5 months, you must reside and plow snow within 45 minutes of the assigned garage within the district of the position.
Shift Requirements 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and are subject to 24‑hour calls during emergencies or weather conditions; occasional overnight travel may be required.
Responsibilities
Serve as a lead worker in providing or overseeing specialized highway maintenance services
Coordinate and monitor pavement marking operations in the field
Compile crew work statistics and document activities
Operate paint trucks and all equipment associated with pavement marking of highways
Prepare project plans within budgetary limitations
Monitor conditions of assigned buildings and grounds
Review maintenance records, material supplies, inventory records, and crew reports
Coordinate with other agencies
Oversee traffic control for maintenance activities
Use DOT technical devices and software applications
Operate snow equipment
Grading/paving projects
Perform routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of full‑time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
Four years of education and/or full‑time experience (as described above) with thirty semester hours of post‑high‑school education in related fields equal to one year of full‑time experience.
Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch including eighteen months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch including twenty‑four months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
Additional Qualification Requirements
Possession of a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire. Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements and restrictions within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority.
Pre‑employment drug screen and ongoing participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program per Title 49 CFR parts 40 and 382.
Pre‑employment physical to verify ability to perform job duties.
MAY be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
MAY be required to obtain certifications for testing materials and operating specialized equipment per Iowa DOT Technical Training and Certification Program, and/or other required certifications.
MAY be required to attend bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
Travel, including overnight travel, may be required; employees must arrange transportation.
MAY be required to reside within a defined driving time from the assigned work location.
Must respond to emergency situations as required.
Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
