Colorado Department of Corrections, Office of the Inspector General (OIG) – Background Investigations, PREA or Records Unit – seeks a Technician IV to provide comprehensive background investigative support and cross‑train on related duties. The role is based in Colorado Springs, CO, with potential work in Denver after onboarding.
Department Information The Office of the Inspector General supports state government and citizens by ensuring effective, efficient, and transparent delivery of services. Representatives in this office provide insight, oversight and help redesign delivery processes.

Description of Job Provide full‑cycle investigative services for the CDOC, including research, analysis, database management, background integrity interviews, and quality assurance of investigative work.
Job Duties
Conduct comprehensive pre‑employment investigations following Colorado Revised Statute (C.R.S.) 17‑1‑103.8(2)(e).
Review and analyze legal documents and reports to determine applicant eligibility.
Perform preliminary background searches to identify ineligible individuals.
Research and interpret criminal court, district attorney, and police reports.
Analyze criminal charges, behaviors, and employment history for compliance with CDOC standards.
Query databases such as the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and the National Crime Information System for criminal history.
Conduct background integrity interviews to detect deception or undisclosed criminal conduct.
Manage database tracking systems for pre‑employment actions and maintain data accuracy.
Assist with other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of technical experience, including two (2) years of searching, querying, and modifying complex computer databases under confidentiality and providing outstanding customer service.
Technical work involves specialized techniques applied to achieve professional tasks requiring deep field knowledge.
Substitution Relevant college, university, or non‑correspondence coursework in criminal justice, criminology, business, psychology, sociology, or social sciences may substitute experience one‑to‑one. An unofficial transcript confirming enrollment and degree must accompany the application.

Conditions of Employment
21+ years, valid Colorado driver’s license, high school diploma or GED
Must have no felony convictions and meet specific statutes regarding sexual offense history
Eligibility to work in the United States with e‑Verify; no visa sponsorship
Must complete the six‑week CDOC Basic Training (defensive tactics, reading, competency assessments)
Physical fitness to perform defensive tactics; ability to lift, kick, restrain, and use defensive tools
Exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and duty
Valid hearing and vision for safety operations
Willingness to travel and work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends
Tuberculosis screening required; drug testing required (including ongoing screening)
Assessment Process Applicants are evaluated against Minimum Qualifications. Qualified candidates enter a comparative analysis that may include screening, eSkills, oral and written assessments, or subject‑matter expert interviews. AI tools are prohibited and may disqualify applicants.
