Arboretum Maintenance Technician I

Job Summary The primary responsibility for an employee in this position is landscape installation and maintenance within the grounds of the Arboretum and Gardens at Tanglewood Park. The employee will report directly to the Director of the Arboretum (Forsyth County Horticulture Agent) and ultimately the County Extension Director, and will assist with oversight of volunteers in the garden.
Responsibilities
Assist with projects and set up for events throughout the Arboretum, with work varying seasonally.
Schedule work hours to include occasional staff meetings, department events, training (as determined by the Director), and interface with department staff to promote Arboretum events.
Perform landscape installation and maintenance, including mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and trees, landscaping, planting, fertilizing, spraying, and leaf removal.
Assist with outdoor activities such as removing snow and ice from county parking lots and sidewalks.
Maintain mowers and other small equipment and tools, and service or repair small equipment as needed.
Load and unload equipment.
Interact regularly with volunteers assisting with maintenance and with members of the public who visit the gardens; experience working with volunteers and serving the public is preferred.
Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED and one year experience in basic building or grounds maintenance work.
Valid driver's license.
Demonstrated ability to safely operate small to medium motorized equipment.
Knowledge and experience in horticulture, particularly with herbaceous and woody ornamentals; ability to plant, identify, prune, and maintain woody and herbaceous ornamentals.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. occasionally and 10–25 lbs. frequently.
Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license after employment.
Experience with pesticide application and compliance with relevant regulations is an added advantage.
Self‑motivated with ability to complete tasks and projects independently, and willingness to work outside year‑round.
Additional Requirements
An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered for minimum qualification requirements.
Maintaining a driver's license in good standing and compliance with North Carolina law and applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers when required.
