$17.27 - $19.28 per hour (New Jersey)

Job Overview The Unit Secretary assists members of the healthcare team to provide care based on hospital and regulatory policies and procedures. The role also supports patient care under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse according to the policies and procedures of the hospital and the State Nurse Practice Act, and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED
Strong customer service skills
Clerical experience, including computer skills required
Certifications & Licenses Required
AHA BLS required within 6 months of the date of hire
Scheduling Requirements
Full‑time, three 12‑hour shifts
7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., every other weekend
Includes a weekend and holiday rotation
Essential Functions
Functions as the liaison between patients/families and healthcare providers
Responds to call bells by physically going to patient rooms within 30 seconds and directs patients to appropriate staff
Places calls for consults and follows up; coordinates activities with other services (pharmacy, lab, dietary, radiology, cardiology, security, housekeeping, maintenance)
Maintains a clean and clutter‑free environment by wiping down equipment and phones at the nursing station with hospital‑approved disinfectant wipes; clears printers and fax machines periodically to ensure security of medical records
Welcomes new patients and families upon arrival to the floor and assists transport personnel and nursing staff in transferring patients from stretcher to bed
Scans patient ID bracelets upon discharge in a timely manner and updates the computer system of discharge
Assists in transporting patients to and from diagnostic tests and transfers to higher levels of care
Performs patient rounding every hour to ensure patient safety, address toileting and pain needs, and direct issues to appropriate nursing staff with follow‑up to ensure satisfactory resolution
Performs receptionist duties, answers phone calls while maintaining professional phone etiquette, and communicates with visitors, MDs, co‑workers, ancillary departments, and vendors in a professional and courteous manner
Collaborates with RNs and PCAs to assist in feeding and ambulating patients as appropriate
Recognizes emergent or potential emergent situations and responds appropriately, remaining alert, observant, and attentive to patients at all times
