Department of Health Services Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long‑term behavioral health care. ASH promotes hope and wellness, creates opportunities to participate in planning, delivering and evaluating services that assist with recovery.

Job Summary This position is eligible for a $5,000 hiring incentive. The Psychiatric Social Worker manages the care and treatment of patients at the Arizona State Hospital, coordinating admissions and discharges within the state's community‑based program/facilities and working with multidisciplinary teams. The role conducts individual, group and family therapy, interventions, psychoeducation, prepares clinical documentation, secures patient entitlements, develops treatment plans, prepares correspondence for legal matters, and serves as the primary contact for community agencies, case managers, guardians and family members.

Salary: $61,820 – $67,440

Job Duties

Conduct individual, group, and family therapy, interventions, and psychoeducation using professionally accepted psychotherapeutic interventions, observe and document patient progress and changes in psychosocial conditions.

Perform social work activities for assigned caseload, conduct psychosocial assessments, assist in the development, review, and update of individual treatment plans, act as primary contact for patients, community agencies, case managers, guardians, and family members, assess discharge readiness and coordinate discharge planning.

Coordinate and manage patient care with multidisciplinary treatment teams, participate in multidisciplinary staffing with patients/guardians, community supports, and community agencies.

Attend and participate in professional conferences, workshops, seminars to comply with ongoing professional education and training requirements of the Arizona State Board of Behavioral Health Examiners; participate in staff and department clinical meetings to ensure appropriate clinical care and service coordination.

Attend and participate in administrative meetings to ensure compliance with all Arizona State Hospital policy and procedures and state and federal regulations.

Perform other duties as assigned related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of interactive treatment/therapy methods for patients with serious mental illness, current concepts of basic human needs and responses.

Knowledge of clinical documentation and state/community resources for patients with serious mental illness.

Knowledge of current concepts, theories, and terminology used in diagnosis and treatment of persons in need of psychiatric care.

Knowledge of Performance Management (PM), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and Lean methodologies.

Strong leadership ability and excellent verbal and written communication.

Skills in evaluation of family dynamics, social influences, and interpersonal relationships.

Skills in interacting with psychiatric patients and their families; therapeutic intervention, interviewing patients and family members/community representatives.

Ability to write and complete discharge plans, assessments, and reports.

Ability to provide quality social services to patients and their families.

Ability to timely and accurately write required reports and psychosocial assessments.

Ability to follow and interpret program policies and procedures.

Ability to work independently within the guidelines of the treatment team.

Selective Preference(s) The preferred candidate will be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) per the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners and possess work experience in a psychiatric setting and competency in care of adults and the forensic population.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited college or university and be a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) per the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners at time of hire or within 12 months of hire.

A State Hospital employee must obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1758.07.

Driving is required for State Business.

Employees who drive on state business must possess a current, valid state‑issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete required driver training per Arizona Administrative Code R2‑10‑207.11.
