Job Description Title:
Heavy Equipment Operator
Reports to:
Operations Manager
FLSA Status:
Non‑Exempt
Purpose of the Role You show up prepared and focused, ready to operate large equipment safely, efficiently, and responsibly. You understand that every load moved, pile turned, and blend completed contributes to McGill’s mission of sustainability and operational excellence. You work independently while remaining closely connected to your team, communicate clearly, follow procedures, and take ownership of both equipment care and jobsite safety. You don’t cut corners; you do the job right.

Responsible for
Safely and proficiently operate heavy equipment including front‑end loaders, excavators, skid steers, grinders, screeners, and heavy trucks.
Start equipment engines, shift gears, operate controls, and make operational adjustments to ensure efficient and safe performance.
Load trucks and transport materials safely to designated areas.
Perform material blending and mixing operations using heavy equipment to achieve required consistency and quality standards, based on skill level.
Operate primary and/or final screening equipment, based on skill level.
Attach and detach equipment and attachments, ensuring proper alignment and secure connection.
Conduct daily pre‑shift inspections and routine preventative maintenance, including fueling, lubricating, cleaning, and reporting mechanical issues.
Maintain compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
Participate in required safety meetings, training sessions, and audits.
Work independently while maintaining a productive and efficient work schedule.
Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Team Lead, Operations Manager, or Management.
Essentials for the Role Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, safety rules, procedures, and basic correspondence.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers in one‑on‑one and small group settings.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to carry out instructions.
Ability to solve practical problems involving standardized processes and procedures.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with two or more years related experience and/or training operating a front‑end loader.
Success Profile
Operational Efficiency:
Operate heavy machinery, including front‑end loaders, excavators with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency to ensure the smooth and continuous processing of organic materials into mulch and soil.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to all company and regulatory safety protocols, perform daily equipment inspections, and proactively address maintenance needs to promote a safe work environment and minimize downtime.
Quality Control:
Monitor and adjust operations such as screening and blending to maintain consistent product quality standards in line with McGill’s composting specifications.
Team Collaboration:
Contribute to a culture of mutual support by communicating clearly with team members, assisting others as needed, and participating actively in safety meetings and training sessions.
Work Schedule Reliability:
Demonstrate consistent attendance and punctuality, manage time effectively, and maintain productivity levels that meet or exceed shift expectations.
Continuous Improvement:
Identify and report operational inefficiencies or potential hazards and contribute ideas for process enhancements that support productivity and product quality.
Environmental Stewardship:
Support McGill’s sustainability mission by managing materials with care and minimizing waste or spillage during handling and transport.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment Physical Demands
Use repetitive motion on legs, arms, and neck (frequently).
Sit (frequently).
Use hands and reach with hands and arms (frequently).
Climb or balance (to enter equipment).
Walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk or hear (occasionally).
Lift and/or move up to 10 to 50 pounds (occasionally).
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Work Environment
Wet or humid conditions based on weather or non‑weather.
Work near moving mechanical parts.
Work near fumes or airborne particles.
Work performed on uneven terrain such as grades and slopes.
Work surfaces that may be slippery when walking.
Noise levels that are usually moderate to loud.
