Department Detail – Blue Ridge Broadcasting, operator of The Light FM, shares the hope of Jesus Christ through encouraging music and Bible teaching. Most listeners of The Light FM engage the ministry through BRB’s twelve radio stations. The lead station, 106.9 FM WMIT, has the 12th largest coverage area of any FM station in America, thanks to its transmitter site near the summit of Mt. Mitchell. Among the larger cities served by The Light FM are Charlotte, Asheville and Winston‑Salem, North Carolina; Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Knoxville, Tennessee. The Light FM is also available on the Light FM app and on all popular smart speakers.
Job Summary – The Managing Director, Engineering provides leadership and business operations functions for the Engineering department and is responsible for oversight of broadcast‑related infrastructure including installation, maintenance and repairs of all equipment and managing the interfacing relationships with broadcast IT and business operations IT.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee all BRB studios and transmitter sites, including BRB’s equipment (hardware and software), needs related to broadcast operations both in the main facilities and at each tower site for optimum performance
Assist the Managing Director, Programming and Content with development and implementation of infrastructure for all present and planned media platform strategies
Develop annual operations and capital expenditure budgets for all Engineering responsibilities
Observe and discern trends in broadcast equipment, engineering best practices, and new media (Internet, mobile devices, streaming, etc) and recommend options to General Manager
Research and assess potential benefits and challenges of prospective broadcast acquisitions as needed
Work closely with Technical and Facilities Manager to achieve Engineering objectives
Work closely with BRB/Cove‑based BGEA System & Network Analyst and BGEA IT staff to achieve Engineering objectives and to ensure no unplanned interruptions to BRB business operations’ IT needs and greater BGEA IT infrastructure
In collaboration with Managing Director, Programming and Content, determine optimum audio chain processing for desired listening objectives, as determined by the Managing Director, Programming and Content
In concert with the General Manager and BGEA Legal, oversee the compliance, filing, and record‑keeping of BRB regarding FCC rules, specifically as it relates to BRB’s FCC Licenses, Construction Permits, Public Files, EEO, EAS, OSHA, State, Federal and local regulations and all technical aspects of the ministries
Instruct and assist on‑air hosts and other Programming and Content staff who utilize studios in the proper operation of the station’s equipment used for broadcast, production and digital upload, and understanding of any relevant FCC procedures and requirements
Assist BGEA’s IT Department as needed in projects related to broadcast and digital content operations and delivery
Provide excellent customer service to all BRB, BGEA, and BGTC departments
Oversee project work related to broadcast technology, including the execution of strategic and tactical projects, regular maintenance and updates
Present project plans and progress updates to General Manager and Leadership Team as needed
Serve as the main contact for tenants leasing at BRB tower sites
Provide or ensure the provision of around‑the‑clock technical response and support for all off‑air events and timely repair of broadcast system problems, outages, and emergencies
Recruit and manage Engineering direct reports, as applicable, including goal setting, performance reviews, and operational tasking
Recruit, direct, and guide contract engineers, as needed, to help with ongoing work, emergencies, projects, market‑specific oversight, etc.

Job Specifications
Skills and Knowledge
Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, or completion of applicable technical and RF‑related courses and minimum of 5 years’ experience in broadcast engineering
Experience in managing broadcast engineers and in computer networking, a plus
Professional Certifications such as SBE or Cisco, for example, are a plus
Knowledge of AM and FM transmission systems with an emphasis on current generation transmitters and FM non‑directional and directional multi‑bay antennas
Knowledgeable of all technologies related to the studio to transmitter links and redundant program feeds
Knowledgeable of diesel‑powered generators, uninterruptable power supplies, and other relevant alternate power resources
Experience with effective vendor evaluation, selection and management
Experience with contract and purchasing negotiations
Experience in the following areas: leadership / management of direct reports; project management; construction management
Experience interacting with all levels of the organization, communicating in the basic terms and descriptions the listener can understand
Knowledge of FCC compliance and licensing processes
