Senior Geotechnical Project Engineer – Transportation & DOT Design‑Build

Drive the geotechnical scope for major transportation infrastructure, including design‑build programs for NCDOT and more. Shape deliverables, coach junior staff, and contribute to client relationships. It’s a technical leadership role with real impact and visibility.
Key Responsibilities
Lead geotechnical design on highway, bridge, and transportation infrastructure projects across North Carolina, emphasizing DOT/NCDOT design‑build programs.
Engineer and oversee analysis for embankments, retaining walls, deep and shallow foundations, slope stability, and settlement.
Write, review, and approve geotechnical reports, ensuring quality and accuracy of all submittals to DOT clients.
Oversee and plan geotechnical field explorations, including drilling, test pits, and inspections.
Serve as technical lead on project teams while mentoring junior engineers, field staff, and project managers.
Ensure compliance with DOT and AASHTO standards while developing innovative and cost‑effective design solutions.
Collaborate with other ECS teams across the region on multidisciplinary efforts and larger transportation programs.
Support business development by strengthening relationships with current clients and identifying opportunities for growth.
Partner with marketing and proposal teams to showcase ECS’s geotechnical capabilities in transportation infrastructure.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required; Professional Geologist (P.G.) license may be acceptable in certain states.
5+ years of experience in geotechnical and transportation engineering, with a focus on design, project management, and technical leadership.
Expertise in DOT Geotechnical Design Manual (GDM), AASHTO LRFD specifications, and geotechnical software (e.g., gINT, LPile, APile, MSEW, FB‑Pier, GRLWEAP).
Proficiency in MicroStation is preferred.
Proven track record of leading technical reviews and serving as a senior technical reviewer at a previous firm.
Strong analytical, report‑writing, and communication skills.
Demonstrate initiative and leadership in problem‑solving and decision‑making.
Valid driver’s license required for travel on behalf of ECS.
