Purpose Of Role Reporting to IT Manager, the Supervisor, Mine Technology Networks & Infrastructure will lead the strategic design, implementation, and deployment of a cutting-edge operational technology (OT) network at our Copper World project site in Helvetia, AZ. This role will manage both current mine communication systems and the deployment of a new private
LTE network
to support voice, data, and autonomous haulage. Additionally, the supervisor will oversee the implementation of a
Rajant mesh network
for data capture from IoT devices, Vehicle Information Management Monitoring Systems (VIMMS), and site infrastructure such as gas and water stations, radio repeaters, lightning detection systems, among others.
This role will be located at the Copper World Project, approximately 45 minutes southwest of Tucson near Sahuarita, Arizona.
Role Accountabilities Strategy, Design & Implementation
Lead the Private LTE Network Deployment: Oversee the end-to-end design, implementation, and optimization of the site’s private LTE network infrastructure to ensure high availability, low latency, and security for mission-critical applications, including autonomous haulage and high-definition voice/data communications.
Rajant Mesh Network Integration: Direct the deployment and integration of a Rajant wireless mesh network, ensuring seamless connectivity and high-speed data transfer for all operational technology (OT) assets, including VIMMS and other critical IoT devices.
System Architecture & Standards: Develop and maintain technical standards, documentation, and network diagrams for all communications and networking infrastructure. Ensure all deployments comply with regulatory and safety requirements.
Project Management: Manage technology implementation projects from planning through deployment, including budget management, vendor management, and resource allocation.
Support: Define and implement a coherent and effective support strategy for all mine operations technology networks, systems, and equipment, taking into consideration the specific needs of a 24x7 operation.
Team Leadership & Technical Oversight
Supervision and Mentorship: Supervise and mentor the Mine Operations Technology Field Support Specialist, overseeing Tier 1 and Tier 2 technical support activities, including troubleshooting Ethernet and Wi-Fi networks, structured cabling, and Motorola radio systems.
Escalation Point: Act as the primary escalation point for complex technical issues affecting mine-critical operations, minimizing downtime and production impact.
Hands-on Support: Due to the team-building phase, this role will include hands-on, field-level work, such as installation, configuration, testing, and physical troubleshooting of network hardware and cabling, in the same demanding environment as the field support specialists.
Collaboration: Collaborate extensively with internal teams (Operations, IT, Process, Maintenance) and external vendors to ensure alignment of technology with business goals.
Maintenance, Safety & Compliance
Infrastructure Maintenance: Oversee routine and preventative maintenance on all communications infrastructure, including network hardware, servers, software updates, backups, and physical equipment inspections and inventory.
Safety Adherence: Ensure the strict adherence to all mine safety protocols, including those related to working at heights, in confined spaces, and around heavy mobile equipment.
System Integrity: Maintain and manage essential systems, such as Lightning Detection Systems, Audio Video equipment, radio communications, among others.
Minimum Qualifications And Education
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in an OT/IT technical role, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity in a mining, or equivalent demanding field environment.
Direct, in-depth experience with the design and deployment of Private LTE (or 4G/5G) networks for mission-critical applications.
Proven expertise with wireless mesh networking, Autonomous Haulage networks, or a similar high-performance mobile network solution.
Demonstrated experience with enterprise-grade networking hardware (e.g., Aruba, Cisco), including configuration and advanced troubleshooting.
Experience with physical communications infrastructure, including structured cabling (copper and fiber optic), microwave, etc.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts in simple terms to both technical staff and senior management.
Experience working in an open-pit mining environment is strongly preferred.
Certifications such as the following are strongly preferred:
PMP or similar Project Management certification.
CompTIA Network+ or CCNA/CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Associate/Professional).
LTE/4G/5G specific certifications.
Expertise in Motorola radio systems and protocols (e.g., MOTOTRBO) as well as other LTE based push-to-talk systems.
