The Role This posting is for recent or upcoming 2026 high‑school graduates. Newport News Shipbuilding offers a $500 sign‑on bonus and a $500 relocation bonus to new hires who live 50 miles or more from Newport News, VA. Current NNS employees are ineligible for the sign‑on bonus. The position is for candidates with no trade experience who can complete a two‑week, unpaid Deck Electrician training program, or for those who already hold a certificate in a related trade.

We partner with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer a Marine Trades Training (MTT) program. The Deck Electrician Trainee program runs once a month at Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA) and consists of 80 hours of instruction from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday‑Friday. Candidates who provide a certificate or diploma in electrical or a directly related field (e.g., commercial, residential, industrial, aviation electrical, renewable energy, generator installation, appliance repair) may be exempt from the trainee program.

Responsibilities

Install, repair, overhaul, and test electrical systems on aircraft carriers and submarines.

Read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints.

Conduct lighting, receptacle, wireway rack, and electronic control installations.

Perform preventative maintenance, equipment rebuilding, and welding of studs.

Work safely in various weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding or ladders, and in confined spaces such as tanks or compartments.

Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.

Must Have

Ability to complete the 2‑week (80‑hour) unpaid training program or provide one or more certificates of completion or diploma in electrical or a directly related field.

Willingness to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.

Ability to pass a physical agility test.

Capability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.

Able to lift at least 40 pounds.

Ability to perform overhead work.

Willingness to work overtime as needed.

Must be clean‑shaven to wear a respirator.

Prepared to work outdoors year‑round, in all weather conditions.

Capability to work at extreme heights and in small, tight, confined spaces.

Open to any shift.
