Underground Utilities Maintenance Technician I
The Underground Utilities Maintenance Technician I position performs semi‑skilled and unskilled work in the repair and maintenance of water mains, water meters, and fire hydrants and sanitary and storm water sewer system. This position performs heavy manual labor. Job Competencies: Essential Functions
Excavates ground for water main breaks, new installations, fire hydrant installations, replacing valves, and other work Cleans out open trenches for proper water flow Backfills ditches and holes Loads material on truck Operates medium and light equipment and trucks Repairs and replaces water valves and pipes Repairs and replaces fire hydrants Pours and finishes concrete Lifts pipe, fire hydrants, and valves in boom truck Operates hand tools, trucks, pin locator, and metro truck Uses small hand and power tools Makes various sizes of water taps Raises and lowers meter tiles to ground level Replaces broken shut‑offs and risers Maintains machinery and equipment Cleans assigned areas of public works grounds Performs standby duties up to five times a year or more, including helping with the inspection, cleaning, and repair of sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines Assists other departments as needed Collects and takes water samples to water plant Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures Operates all job‑related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic Position Requirements and Qualifications:
High school diploma or other equivalent One to three years of construction of all underground utilities is preferred but not required CDL‑A license a plus but not required Certifications / Licenses:
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Knowledge of concrete preparation and finishing Ability to learn water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection lines, and repair and maintenance standards Ability to read and interpret map books and flow charts Ability to receive, understand, and follow oral and written instructions Ability to learn safety standards and procedures in work assignments Ability to operate a tapping machine, boom truck, dump truck, jack hammer, friction saw, hydra‑stop machine, metro‑tech, hand tools, and other related equipment Excellent time management skills and ability to multi‑task and prioritize work Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously Strong written and verbal communication skills Problem solving and critical thinking skills Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities Ability to communicate in a professional, calm and courteous manner with general public and employees Resume and cover letter can be emailed to sgrogg@emporiaks.gov
