Description Job Summary The Outpatient Surgery & Procedural RN provides comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing same‑day surgical and diagnostic procedures. This role supports pre‑operative, intra‑procedural, and post‑operative phases of care, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and efficient clinical flow in an ambulatory setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Conducts pre-operative assessments, including medical history, medication reconciliation, and patient education.
Verifies informed consent, procedure details, and patient identification.
Prepares patients physically and emotionally for procedures.
Initiates IV access and administers medications as ordered. Administers medications and IV fluids per protocol.
Assists physicians and procedural teams during surgeries or invasive procedures.
Monitors vital signs, cardiac rhythm, oxygenation, and patient status.
Maintains sterile technique and adheres to infection control standards.
Monitors patients in Phase I and/or Phase II recovery.
Assess pain, nausea, bleeding, and overall recovery status.
Provides discharge teaching, medication instructions, and follow‑up care guidance. Communicates effectively with patients, families, and caregivers.
Documents patient care accurately and thoroughly.
Recognizes and responds to changes in patient condition or emergencies.
Ensures compliance with regulatory standards (Joint Commission, CMS, state regulations).
Participates in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
Coordinates care with surgeons, anesthesiology, and interdisciplinary teams.
Serves as a patient advocate throughout the procedural experience.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimal Qualifications Education
Associate's degree in nursing or higher from an accredited institution
Licenses/Certifications
Current and valid DC license as a Registered Nurse Current and valid out-of-state licensure AND evidence of application for the DC license would be considered
Experience
A minimum of 2 years of relevant clinical experience
Physical Requirements
Walk, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulder frequently in an office setting.
Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role
Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
