Position Overview
The Department of American Studies invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position with a primary emphasis on the interdisciplinary study of the body—medicine, health, disability, transgender experiences—and other facets of American culture. The successful candidate will design and teach core American Studies courses, develop specialization courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to departmental life through teaching, research, and service.
Core Responsibilities
- Develop and teach core American Studies courses and specialized courses relevant to the instructor’s scholarly focus.
- Produce scholarship that meets the criteria for tenure, including research, creative writing, and related publications.
- Advise students, serve on departmental and university committees, and participate in broader disciplinary communities.
- Engage in faculty events and support institutional goals of inclusive excellence and student success.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in American Studies or a related field with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary study of the body (ABDs may apply if completion by appointment date is demonstrated).
- Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Strong record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the rank.
- Experience in collaboration with colleagues and a commitment to inclusive education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to balance teaching, scholarship, and service.
- Commitment to serving students from intersecting marginalized groups.
- Evidence of successful research and publications.
- Experience teaching American Studies theories and methods at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Experience teaching a diverse student population.

Salary and Benefits
Assistant Professor (Academic Year) salary range: $6,221 – $13,224 monthly (12 payments). Anticipated hiring range: $7,349 – $7,487 per month. Benefits include health, vision, dental, domestic partner coverage, dependent fee waiver, campus child‑care, and a defined‑benefit retirement plan. Additional research grant opportunities and reduced teaching load may be available.
