General Description: The Science Tutor of CEVSS provides Veteran students and Veteran dependents with specialized academic support in science, helping them build the foundational skills needed to succeed in their coursework and achieve their educational goals.
This appointment is contingent upon availability of grant funding. Once the funds from the grant that provide funding for this appointment are no longer available, this appointment may be terminated without cause upon written notice to the employee.
Reports To: Director of Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success (CEVSS)
What position(s) reports to this position? NA
Current OCCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours for the Fall or Spring semester or enrolled in a minimum of 3 hours for the Summer semester OR Current OCCC student with a Federal Work Study award.
Major must be in a biological science, chemistry, health professions or related field required maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, demonstrating success in the related subject matter.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge:
Knowledge of safety and health procedures for handling hazardous chemicals and infectious organisms Knowledge relevant to tutoring any coursework for which the applicant is applying Must be able to adhere to policies, procedures and guidelines to assure personal safety, and the safety of other personnel
Skills:
Basic computer skills Skilled effective communication, customer service expertise, and human relations skills while performing at work Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
Abilities:
Ability to observe and detect signs of hazards and obstacles that may cause injury to students and staff in the Physical Sciences Center and Labs Ability to maintain a clean and organized work and storage area Must be able to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position Must be punctual and reliable
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
PHYSICAL / MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. This position requires the person to frequently move about the center to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position. This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, and staff to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations. This position frequently requires the person to operate and inspect a computer and other Writing Center equipment to assist and/or instruct students on proper operation. This position requires the person to view a computer multiple hours in a day. They are asked to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations. This position performs the essential functions in an indoor center, classroom, or office setting.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)
Help CEVSS Veteran students who may be low-income, first-generation, or disabled students succeed in overcoming barriers to a college education.
Assist in opening and closing the CEVSS Veteran Services Center and Lounge following procedures as assigned.
Assist CEVSS Veteran Services Center staff with general upkeep of office areas and lounge.
Assist with administrative tasks in the CEVSS Veteran Services Center including but not limited to answering phones, directing students, organizing and stocking available resource publications, answering general questions about the Veteran Services Center and general campus.
Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff visitors while performing duties.
Participate in training offered by OCCC appropriate to this position to remain effective in this positions assigned duties.
Assist Veteran students with their lecture material, lab work, and/or special projects in person or via zoom during their work hours in the Veteran Services Center.
Must be willing to complete tutor training, required training per OCCC normal requirements, including annual Title IX and FERPA trainings.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
