Solid Waste Operator
This position operates a truck along an assigned route to collect and transport solid waste and operates other equipment as assigned. An incumbent in this position may be designated "Senior Solid Waste Operator."
Responsibilities include:
- Operating a refuse truck along an assigned route to collect and transport solid waste.
- Performing equipment inspections and minor maintenance; reporting serious maintenance needs to supervisor.
- Maintaining work logs via on-board computer, updating route data.
- Completing work and service orders.
- Assembling and cleaning containers; delivering containers to customers.
- Welding and repairing dumpsters.
- Operating equipment to collect yard waste.
- Operating a snowplow as assigned.
- Performing related duties.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, equipment operation, maintenance, and repair principles, computers and job-related software programs, city streets and landmarks, planning, organization, and decision making, customer services, and oral and written communication are required.
Supervisory controls are provided by the Solid Waste Manager, who assigns work in terms of general instructions and spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Guidelines include traffic laws, equipment operation guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures.
The work consists of related equipment operation and other duties. Inclement weather conditions and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to operate equipment to collect solid waste and in support of other department operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of department functions.
Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
Supervisory and management responsibility is none. Minimum qualifications include knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to possession of a high school diploma or GED, sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years, and possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of Wyoming.
