Gifted Education Teacher

Position Title: Gifted Education Teacher Supervises: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students. Job Goal: To develop in each pupil skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship to develop appreciation of good literature of all types; to motivate pupils to read widely for information and recreation; to develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in the field of English. Qualifications: 1. Valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate. 2. Endorsement in Elementary Education/Gifted Education or Middle Grades Education with add on Endorsement in Gifted Education. 3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Reports To: School Principal and Special Education Coordinator Salary: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience. Performance Responsibilities: Designs and coordinates a program of study that meets individual needs, interests and abilities of gifted students. Utilizes technology to teach research skills. Has the competency to operate computers and instruct students in using the computer lab, CDE learning center, word processors and printers. Has knowledge of characteristics and needs of gifted learners. Creates a learning environment where students can use strengths, risk new ideas and feel challenged. Nurtures creativity and encourages thinking skills. Develops flexible and challenging lesson plans to meet individual needs and nurture group interaction. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Maintains an auditable record of pupil attendance and makes daily reports. Controls assigned district-owned instructional equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously. Evaluates, selects, and requisitions books, instructional aids, equipment, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the time designated. Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives. Strives to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives for the gifted program. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Evaluates student progress on a regular basis. Maintains accurate, and complete records, as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances. Attends and participates in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration. Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods. Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides parents/students with nine week and mid-term progress reports. Provides for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meets at least minimum school district requirements of the annual number of inservice hours. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive display, bulletin boards, and interest centers. Assumes such other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
