Job Summary

Reports To: Transportation Supervisor Job Goal To safely operate school system vehicles and to transport students, employees and designated persons for the effective operation of school system programs and activities Qualifications: 1. High school diploma or equivalent 2. Valid Alabama CDL and school bus driver's license required. 3. Must meet all local, state, and federal licensing requirements and regulations required to operate a school bus and automobile 4. Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board's policies regarding drug testing, operating system-owned vehicles, transporting students and all applicable policies 5. Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record 6. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and state Board of Education regulations Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Ability to operate a school vehicle safely over an assigned route according to a definite time schedule which may require driving during pre-daylight and dusk periods 2. Ability to operate a school vehicle in compliance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations, including defensive driving habits and posted speed limits 3. Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility, and visual acuity to safely operate a school bus or other system-owned vehicle Performance Responsibilities: 1. Adheres to all traffic laws 2. Performs required pre-trip inspections according to state-mandated guidelines 3. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses 4. Maintains discipline when students are on the bus 5. Reports to the proper authority students with discipline problems 6. Transports students to and from school 7. Transports students on field trips and outings, athletic events, and other extracurricular or co-curricular events, often in the evening and at night as assigned 8. Prepares for and assists students in evacuating the bus and to transport safety/first-aid equipment to care for injuries 9. Maintains safety precautions when students are boarding and departing buses 10. Reports all accidents immediately to the transportation office and other appropriate officials 11. Attends periodic safety meetings and training 12. Accurately keeps and submits monthly route reports and daily pre-trip inspection reports 13. Keeps the bus clean and orderly daily 14. Identifies needs and arranges for necessary repairs and maintenance work 15. Regulates heating, cooling and ventilation equipment provided on the bus for the comfort and safety of the passengers 16. Keeps to the assigned schedule and discharges students only at authorized stops 17. Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness 18. Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-town school trips 19. Transports only authorized persons 20. Maintains and uses communications or video surveillance equipment on buses according to school system policies and regulations 21. Maintains cooperative and appropriate relationships with students, parents, community members and other employees 22. Adheres to school system rules and regulations regarding bus pick up, return, storage and use during non-route times 23. Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus 24. Notifies immediate supervisor of absences 25. Performs job-related duties as assigned by supervisor Physical Requirements: Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel. Use the following information when requesting verification of experience from your past employment at other boards of education: Within the state of Alabama, experience must be verified on Supplement EXP Outside the state of Alabama, we must have a letter (on school district letterhead) or public school district form showing beginning and ending dates stating your years of service and position held while employed Credit is awarded for public school experience only, private, parochial, or similar experience will not be accepted Experience must be full time at least 50%-100% of the academic year Administrative credit will be awarded only for experience in the same position, i.e., principal for principal position as stated in the salary schedule Transfer Sick Leave: If you have sick leave from another state school system or from another state of Alabama agency, you must have a Sick Leave Transfer form sent from your previous employer to our Human Resources department The Escambia County Schools awards a salary based on the highest degree earned, even if the degree is outside education. The degree must be verified on an official transcript & recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education.
