HOUSTON COUNTY SCHOOLS Job Title: Special Education Teacher - Deaf and Hard of Hearing PreK-12

Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution. 2. Certified by the State of Alabama in the appropriate area. 3. Considerable knowledge of special education, deaf and hard of hearing including American Sign Language skills, and how to instruct in a bilingual environment. 4. Considerable knowledge of the text, materials, supplies, and equipment necessary in carrying out educational or recreational programs for deaf and hard of hearing students. 5. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of special education law. 6. Must hold an Alabama Driver's License and have reliable transportation to travel to multiple schools. 7. Proficiency in American Language. 8. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations. FLSA: Exempt Reports To: Principal/Designee Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Implements a program in accordance with federal, state and county laws, policies and regulations. 2. Develops and implements an individualized educational plan (IEP) that meets individual needs and abilities of the student. Prepares lesson plans and organizes an instructional program based on the Alabama Course of Study. 3. Teaches pre-school, elementary, or secondary academic or elective classes to educate deaf and hard-of-hearing students. 4. Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. 5. Selects appropriate texts, learning aids, materials and supplies. Oversees the use and care of technical and other specialized equipment for learners with hearing loss. 6. Utilize an assessment system for progress monitoring student achievement toward IEP goals. 7. Obtains consultation from other members of the team in areas outside their expertise, such as audiology or speech therapy, to fully understand the needs of individual children on caseload. 8. Provides consultative services to classroom services to classroom teachers regarding the education of students with hearing impairments. 9. Adheres to established deadlines (IEP documents, progress reports, etc.) 10. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 11. Maintains professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members. 12. Reports potential problems, or unusual events, to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. Reports incidents for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students and employees. 13. Understands and assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board of Education policies. 14. Participates in the efficient and effective operation of the school and school system. Such participation shall include teachers in consultation through meetings, conferences, and committee responsibilities. 15. Accepts no other employment which interferes with the efficient and effective discharge of teacher duties and responsibilities. 16. Abides by the standards established for teachers' professional and personal conduct by the printed and published Code of Ethics. 17. Assists staff in the establishment and maintenance of discipline in the school environment. 18. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, board policy, and administrative regulation. 19. Evaluates student progress regularly and in accordance with the system's established procedures. 20. Seeks assistance of specialists as needed and makes referrals when appropriate. 21. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to safeguard all equipment, materials, and facilities. 22. Makes reasonable provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day. Procedures for such conferences will be mutually agreed upon by faculty and administration. 23. Participates in extracurricular activities as mutually agreed upon by faculty and administration. 24. Attends and participates regularly in faculty meetings and other in-service meetings as assigned and required. 25. Maintains and improves professional competence. 26. Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Extensive understanding of the process of typical language development. 2. Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned. 3. Considerable knowledge of audiograms and the impact of hearing loss on auditory, language, and literacy development. Works with school audiologists and school staff to ensure students with hearing loss have consistent auditory access within the school environment. 4. Considerable knowledge of various amplification systems. 5. Maintain confidentiality regarding records and information. 6. Maintain and develop up-to-date knowledge of good practices in education, specifically about children who are deaf or hard of hearing. 7. Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum. 8. Maintains data, and prepares reports and correspondence related to the work. 9. Knowledge of current educational research. 10. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. 11. Knowledge of learning styles and skills in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles. 12. Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others. 13. Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness. 14. Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement. 15. Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn. 16. Ability to work effectively with peers, administrators, and others. 17. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment. Terms of Employment:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system. Evaluation:
