Reporting to the Executive Director of Labor Relations, the Labor Relations Manager will resolve grievances related to collective bargaining agreements, employee concerns, and potential disciplinary matters. The incumbent will administer HR policies and procedures, provide guidance on discipline, participate in collective bargaining with university unions, and serve as the first point of contact for labor relations issues across departments.
Responsibilities
Research current labor and employee relations policies, procedures, and best practices, and provide information to the Executive for review and consideration.
Act as project manager for departmental initiatives.
Participate with other employee/labor relations professionals in labor-management meetings, including formal and informal discussions to resolve mutual concerns.
Provide updates to the Executive Director on outstanding grievances and disciplinary cases, prepare written responses and reports on other labor and employee relations issues as assigned.
Investigate, develop, and prepare witnesses, documentation, and backup information for grievances, arbitrations, and other employee relations matters.
Serve as employer spokesperson in labor-management meetings.
Represent the employer on committees as needed.
Review employee grievances, meet with employees and supervisors, gather information, evaluate allegations, and serve as hearing officer when directed.
Ensure adherence to contractual requirements during disciplinary hearings.
Support managers in issuing notices of discipline and drafting approvals as appropriate.
Interpret collective bargaining agreements and university policies, and provide guidance to managers and employees.
Assist managers to evaluate potential disciplinary matters, counsel employees, and develop performance improvement plans.
Represent the university in union contract negotiations, draft and vet proposals, build management consensus on bargaining positions, and act as spokesperson.
Partner with HR colleagues to implement cross-functional solutions to common concerns.
Deliver labor and employee relations training on campus.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and 3–5 years of experience in employee relations, labor relations, human resources or paralegal work.
Knowledge of labor/employee relations principles, collective bargaining methods, and federal and state labor laws.
Experience with administrative software and Microsoft Office, and ability to learn other tools.
Analytical skills to research, find solutions, and provide timely advice.
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
Strong research, reporting, and communication skills.
Stay composed under stressful interactions.
Prioritize assignments, work independently, and manage multiple priorities with deadlines.
Exercise judgment in interpreting contracts, regulations and procedures.
Initiate work both independently and in team settings.
Handle fast‑paced multitasking and present materials persuasively.

Preferred Qualifications
J.D. or master’s degree in business, industrial relations or conflict resolution.
Experience drafting and presenting proposals in bargaining.
Experience in the public sector and higher education.
