Description of Job CPW is hiring a temporary position within the Colorado Natural Areas Program (CNAP), a statewide conservation program focusing on the protection of areas with rare plants, wildlife, and geological features. The program relies on a small staff supported by a volunteer stewardship team of over 50 volunteers.

Responsibilities

Assist with monitoring of state natural areas across Colorado, collecting biological data, identifying flora and fauna, and evaluating natural community health.

Create and update GIS maps of state natural areas.

Assist staff with coordination and planning of natural area monitoring visits.

Conduct quantitative and qualitative monitoring of rare plants, including threatened and endangered species.

Write technical field reports and disseminate information to landowners and partners.

Assist with management of the volunteer steward program, including coordination, processing volunteer field reports, and writing newsletters.

Assist with program outreach, quarterly CNAP meetings, and other related tasks as needed.

Basic Requirements

Current and valid driver’s license (required for operating a state vehicle).

Willing and able to work 40 hours per week.

Availability to work varied shifts.

Availability to travel statewide for up to 50% of the field season (May–September) for multiple consecutive days.

Ability to work outdoors under variable weather conditions, hike over rough terrain, and camp for several nights in remote areas.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Ideal Candidate)

Knowledge of Colorado’s flora, fauna, and ecological systems.

Proficiency with identification of Colorado’s natural features using dichotomous keys.

Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, ecology, botany, rangeland science, or at least three years of related work experience.

Experience with backcountry travel, navigation, and driving 4WD vehicles over rough terrain.

Experience conducting biological field‑based monitoring.

Proficiency in ESRI GIS applications (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps).

Strong scientific and technical writing skills.

Ability to work independently and within a team.

Excellent organization, time‑management, collaboration, and communication skills.

Ability to work effectively with volunteers, landowners, and conservation partners.

Driver‑Vehicle Compliance Under DNR‑120 Fleet and Driving Standards, workers operating state‑owned vehicles must maintain a safe driving record and a valid license. Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be reviewed for workers with assigned or operating state fleet vehicles.
