Job Summary and Qualifications The Nurse Extern (RN nursing student) delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, these Patient Care Assistants have an important role in the implementation of nursing plans by performing direct and indirect patient care that complies with hospital policies and the State Board of Nursing rules for unlicensed personnel. Nurse Externs are currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and can perform higher‑level procedures once competency is achieved.

Responsibilities

Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout the cycle of care, including admissions data, vital signs, height and weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood glucose levels, intake and output, and calorie counts.

Document and report observations, interactions, patient responses to performed activities, and any physical or behavioral changes at time of occurrence.

Assist with mobility by regular turning and positioning, dangling, and ambulating patients and with use of walkers, crutches, canes, and wheelchairs.

Provide or assist with non‑medicated support care, collection of specimens for diagnostic testing, and preparation of patient for surgery or other procedure.

Assist with transfers of patients to and from other units / departments and with discharges.

Qualifications You Will Need

Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

Must be actively attending a college of nursing program in a BSN or ADN (RN) program.

Interest in gaining hands‑on experience while attending an academic program.

High school diploma or GED is required.
