Mental Health Technician | Behavioral Health Unit (Inpatient) | PRN | Variable

PRN, varied shifts.
Overview The Mental Health Tech provides care, support, supervision, and safety for patients on an Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit. The role works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team and under direct supervision of an RN to ensure the provision of quality patient care.
Responsibilities
Monitors all patients and provides direct care on the unit, completing routine checks, monitoring the environment for unsafe objects, and recognizing and reporting changes in mood, affect or condition to the nurse.
Assists with admissions, discharges, transfers, obtains and documents vital signs & weight accurately, and reports abnormal results to the nurse; documents appropriately in the electronic medical record.
Assists patients with feeding, personal care (bath and linen changes as necessary), promotes good personal hygiene and room care, and provides support with ADLs.
Utilizes aggression‑control techniques to intervene safely with patients in crisis and assists in facilitating post‑crisis processing.
Demonstrates knowledge of and actively maintains the legal rights of patients. Supervises family visitation and promptly addresses concerns. Orients new patients to unit rules and schedules.
Thoroughly searches patient belongings, documents inventory accurate, and removes contraband. Demonstrates knowledge of program protocols and behavior management during suicide precautions, restraints, elopement precautions, unit restrictions, detox protocol, and general patient rounds.
Assists in developing and leading milieu groups and activities. Works with other staff to support patient and staff safety, monitoring all patients for changes in mood, affect or physical condition and reporting these to the nurse.
Qualifications
Education / Training
High School Diploma / Equivalent
Experience Requirements
0 – 1 year mental health unit / direct patient care
Preferences
Experience working with patients in a mental health care setting.
Certificates / Licenses / Registration
Basic Life Support (BLS)
WELLE Certification
Level 2 DCF Background Screening
Additional Information
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 30 days of employment.
Completion of WELLE training within 90 days of employment; annual re‑certification thereafter.
Level 2 DCF Background Screening required upon hire.
