Patient Care Technician (Med Surg) - Days
Under the general supervision of the Director of DON, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) assists the medical surgical department in providing patient care and meeting personal care needs. The PCT delivers routine, non‑licensed technical bedside care upon request of licensed staff and plays an essential role in the nursing team, adhering to The Joint Commission standards, federal, state, and local regulations and organizational policies.
Responsibilities
Provides basic age‑appropriate patient care under supervision of RN/LPN.
Basic hygiene: offering bath, mouth care, hair care, shaving, and catheter care as assistant to RN/LPN.
Documents accurate vital signs per unit policies and gathers when requested.
Secondary visualization of patients for pressure areas and promptly reports to RN/LPN.
Records accurate I&O and weights according to unit guidelines when requested by RN.
Checks patient armbands upon admission, each shift, and as needed.
Emptying and recording output from foley catheters and/or colostomies.
Follows laboratory policy/procedures.
Verifies two patient identifiers before specimen collection and matches ID band with specimen label.
Delivers or sends other specimens (sputum, stools, urine, etc.) promptly to laboratory as appropriate.
Scans patient armbands for bedside glucose testing.
Collaborates with nursing and respiratory teams to provide appropriate respiratory care.
Encourages turning, coughing, and deep breathing for appropriate patients.
Removes and reapplies oxygen when instructed by RN/LPN.
Demonstrates patient safety awareness and maintains identification band at beginning of shift.
Communicates fall risk and activates exit alarm as indicated.
Uses proper body mechanics and turns/positions patients every 2 hours assisted by RN/LPN.
Performs tasks or clinical skills as delegated.
Maintains awareness of patient nutrition status and assists with meals as needed.
Performs urinary catheter care every shift and as needed.
Maintains infection control measures per policy.
Assists patients with readiness for discharge ensuring all belongings gathered and prepares room for environmental services.
Ensures patient rooms are tidy and organized.
Restocks supplies as directed by RN/LPN, including linen, lab supplies, IV supplies.
Maintains customer service as priority; treats customers and coworkers courteously.
Welcomes new patients promptly with care items and orients to unit.
Answers call lights promptly and communicates message appropriately.
Lists shift report, discusses patients’ plans for the day, and demonstrates interpersonal behaviors supportive of teamwork.
Maintains self‑confidence, constructive relationships, and team function, leading by example and taking initiative.
Observes punctuality and attendance policy, reporting to work as scheduled.
Reports to unit on time (6:45 a.m./6:45 p.m.).
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent; or Patient Care Tech certification; or completion of one semester in a clinical nursing program.
Graduate of a PCT, Nursing Assistant, EMT, CMA, MOA, or U.S. Military Medic Program; or enrolled in a school of Nursing with one full semester of clinical rotations. Patient Care Tech certification preferred.
Additional training regarding glucose testing provided in‑house.
PCT, CMA, MOA, EMT, or Nursing Assistant certificate; BLS/CPR required.
Preferred 6 months experience in a hospital or outpatient care setting.
Familiarity with calculator, personal computer, telephone, fax machine, paper shredder, copier, printer, standard office equipment, dynamap, telemetry.
