RN - Med‑Surg/Inpatient - FT Days - AVALA Hospital - RH412 Provides direct and indirect patient care on the Med/Surg unit. Communicates with physicians, nurse managers and co‑workers about changes in a patient’s clinical condition, including diagnostic results and symptomology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or treatment response. Performs general nursing duties in all departments under adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. May also function in the role of Charge Nurse under the supervision of the Director of Inpatient Services. Acts as patient advocate, reflecting the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility and the department’s focus statement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Monitors and supervises patient care, including diet and physical activities; communicates clearly to charge nurse, director, co‑workers, and physicians.

Prepares patients for and assists with examinations, treatments or procedures.

Performs head‑to‑toe assessments on all patients and reassessments as per policy; interprets data to identify care needs.

Assesses and manages pain using appropriate techniques and educates patients and families.

Performs waived testing (point‑of‑care), draws blood for lab testing, interprets results, and acts per laboratory and unit policies.

Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, disease/surgical conditions, and good judgment; reports changes and initiates appropriate actions.

Administers medications and IV fluids safely using the five medication rights; reduces potential for medical errors.

Maintains and cares for central/PICC lines.

Monitors cardiac rhythms, identifies dysrhythmias, notifies physicians, and treats according to protocol.

Performs CPR accurately and effectively.

Provides patient care that optimizes safety and reduces health‑care errors.

Formulates individualized plans of care, modifies as indicated by patient responses, and evaluates effectiveness daily; involves patient/family.

Stays abreast of changing nursing techniques to maintain expertise.

Exhibits flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress.

Assists with emergency nursing procedures to promptly control physical changes.

Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; maintains a safe, secure environment and good guest relations.

Maintains strong relationships and effective communication both within and outside the department; consults other departments as needed for interdisciplinary care.

Ensures completion of documentation, including health‑plan, consents, handoff tools, medication administration, pre‑anesthetic questionnaire, medication reconciliation, and allergy records.

Practices economical use of equipment and supplies; reports discrepancies to proper authority.

Provides education to staff on performance improvement; offers in‑service training and participates in guidance and educational programs.

Demonstrates the ability to perform treatments and provide services at the level of licensure.

Charge Nurse Responsibilities

Updates table for inpatient log census.

Completes patient classification form to assure efficient staffing levels and patient assignments.

Verifies that temperature logs are completed.

Oversees all staff on the Med‑Surg unit.

Follows protocol for admitting a patient and activating the call team.

Initiates emergency response protocol.

Effectively communicates pertinent issues with the Med‑Surg director.

Supervises dietary after hours.

Follows up on consults and outstanding orders.

Follows protocol for patient transfers.

Is in charge of room assignments, assists with admits and discharges, and ensures minimal delays in patient treatment.

Attends annual review and department in‑services as scheduled.

Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital and the department’s focus statement.

Assists other staff members in performing any duty that enhances patient care delivery.

Critical Care experience preferred.

Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification Requirements (CR.1c) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification, at a minimum, the program direct‑care staff must have eight (8) hours of education specific to the program scope, initially, and at least annually thereafter.

(CR.1e) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification, staff possess adaptability to processes related to up‑to‑date best practices, collaboration between departments, compliance with protocols/processes, communication, cooperation, and exceptional customer service.

Within 90 days of hire or, if currently employed, within 90 days of signing the job description, staff must adhere to:

Orientation of Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification.

Compliance with program education requirements.

Completed department‑specific competencies.

Regulatory Requirements

Graduate of accredited school of nursing.

Current state Registered Nurse Licensure within state of practice.

Current BLS and ACLS certification.

PALS certification recommended.

Skills

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Basic computer knowledge.
