Job Description: Ultrasound Technician (Sonographer) An Ultrasound Technician, also known as a Sonographer, uses ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic images that help doctors assess and diagnose medical conditions related to organs, tissues, and blood flow.

Patient Interaction

Explain procedures to patients and ensure comfort during the exam.

Assist patients with positioning and provide gowns while maintaining privacy.

Operating Ultrasound Equipment

Set up, calibrate, and use transducers to capture high‑quality images.

Adjust equipment settings as needed to ensure accurate results.

Image Evaluation

Review and adjust images to ensure sufficient quality for diagnosis.

Document results and provide reports to physicians or other professionals.

Maintaining Patient Records

Record patient information, procedures performed, and results in electronic health records.

Ensure proper documentation for further medical analysis.

Infection Control

Clean and maintain ultrasound equipment and examination rooms.

Follow infection control protocols to prevent cross‑patient contamination.

Collaboration

Work closely with physicians, radiologists, and staff to interpret images.

Participate in discussions regarding patient care and provide additional imaging when needed.

Other Tasks

Assist with echocardiograms or vascular ultrasound as required.

Keep up with continuing education and training to stay current on technology and best practices.

Educational and Certification Requirements

Completion of an accredited ultrasound technology program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree).

National certification through ARDMS, ARRT, or equivalent.

State licensure or additional testing in some states (California, Florida, New York, Texas, etc.).
