Role Summary
The Senior Real Estate Accountant oversees the accounting and financial reporting for the company’s portfolio of real estate investments. The role is also responsible for property financial reviews, budgeting, and ensuring the accuracy of the financial statements. In this position, you will work with the property management, leasing, construction, and other accounting team members to ensure all real estate activities are tracked and maintained accurately. Roles and responsibilities will shift as the portfolio and team evolves and grows.
Essential Functions
Prepare, compile, and analyze financial statements and related financial reports for a portfolio of retail, office, and other property types
Perform month end close responsibilities as assigned
Assist the Property Management department in the budgeting process
Review of budget vs. actual variances
Oversee all rental revenue billing processes
Annual CAM reconciliations and estimates
Oversee the accounts receivable process including reviews with property managers, process monitoring, and tenant follow-up
Management and tracking of CAPEX spending
Review and analyze lease agreements for financial implications and assist in the setup and maintenance of lease accounting
Assist with internal and external audits by preparing schedules and providing requested documentation
Document and implement best practices for real estate accounting processes and internal controls
Lead or assist in implementing and optimizing real estate accounting software and tools
Strong knowledge of GAAP Accounting
Ability to assess complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
Experience in managing projects with multiple stakeholders, including cross‑departmental collaboration.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret lease and other contractual documents.
Extensive experience and expertise using MRI or Yardi
Experience in adapting accounting processes to align with business growth or technological changes.
Required education and experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting from 4‑year college or university
Minimum 5 years’ experience handling a portfolio of properties in a Real Estate Accountant capacity
Work environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
Position type and expected hours of work
This is a full‑time, on‑site position based in Brentwood, TN. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Travel
Minimal travel expected. Travel to Springfield, IL offices expected periodically or other travel as needed.
