Overview The CUNY Graduate Center invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track faculty member at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The appointment will be in the M.S. in Astrophysics program with a possible affiliation to the Ph.D. program in Physics. The role is part of the Simons Empire Faculty Fellows initiative and requires concurrent application for the 3‑year Visiting Scholar position at the Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) with the Flatiron Institute.
Responsibilities
Lead an active, externally funded research program in astrophysics.
Teach graduate courses, including Computational Methods and Radiative Processes and other advanced courses aligned with the specialist’s interests.
Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and CUNY Masters in Astrophysics candidates.
Contribute to the scientific strategy, management, and organization of the CCA.
Build and foster scientific communities within CCA, Flatiron, NYC, and beyond.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in a related field (Astrophysics or Physics).
1 or more years of postgraduate research experience in astrophysics with interests that overlap or enhance CCA‑relevant interests.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and collaborate with junior scientists.
Evidenced scientific impact appropriate to career stage.
Alignment with multiple aspects of the CCA mission statement.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong publication and funding record.
Experience mentoring students from marginalized backgrounds.
Experience with programs that increase participation of underrepresented students in STEM.
Passion and commitment to providing opportunities for those with limited access.
Strong background in computational astrophysics, including numerical methods and machine learning.
Teaching experience and enthusiasm for engaging diverse student populations.
Interest in teaching computational courses in the Physics PhD Program.
Potential for program development and leadership within the M.S. in Astrophysics Program.
Compensation and Benefits The annual compensation range for this 0.5 full‑time equivalent position is $70,000, in addition to the CUNY Graduate Center faculty salary.
