Responsibilities

Perform specialized law enforcement work in the care and security of inmates in the holding area of the York County Courthouse.

Ensure the security of inmates and the courthouse, and transport inmates for court appearances.

Serve civil processes in the County of York and the City of Poquoson.

Act as Bailiff in a Court of Law, including opening court, maintaining order, and ensuring security of inmates.

Secure inmates in the holding area while awaiting trial; collect fingerprints and photographs, transport inmates to and from courtrooms, ensure inmate searches, handle calls to attorneys, and contact bondsman when necessary.

Patrol courthouse, inspect daily, maintain security at front entrance, process visitors through metal detector and x‑ray machine.

Maintain logs and file court documents.

Respond to telephone inquiries.

Supervise clean‑up and maintenance of holding area.

Coordinate inmate/attorney conferences and perform fingerprinting.

Conduct criminal record checks, serve legal process, perform evictions as necessary, support patrol units with road calls.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

At least 21 years old, U.S. citizen, and meet medical requirements.

Active certification in Basic Jailor or Basic Law Enforcement through Virginia DCJS.

Valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Annual qualification on Sheriff’s Office Firearms Qualification Course and maintenance of DCJS Combined Corrections Certification.

Successful completion of pre‑employment checks (criminal history, background, DMV record).

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of county geography and layout.

Understanding of civil and criminal statutes.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and write clear, comprehensive reports.

Ability to handle sensitive public contacts and deal with the public tactfully and firmly when necessary.

Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick effective actions based on hazards.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Physical Demands Must be physically able to operate machinery, vehicles, and firearms, perform lifting and carrying, run, scale stairs or walls during pursuits, and operate under various temperature and weather conditions.
