About the job Code Enforcement Officer III (Sanitation Enforcement) Position Purpose
The Code Enforcement Officer III is a highly skilled position that performs specialized and complex inspections and enforces municipal, land development, and property maintenance codes within city boundaries. Schedules and performs systematic property maintenance inspections to maintain or achieve minimum property standards and handles difficult technical problems as needed.
Essential Functions
Conducts and performs specialized, technical, and complex inspections on city properties, projects, buildings, homeowner properties, and developments to ensure compliance with all municipal, state, and federal regulations; serves as the final technical authority on code enforcement.
Identifies, determines, and compiles non-compliant concerns and addresses issues with appropriate parties; investigates alleged violations and tracks corrective actions; takes accurate data and information concerning code violations and enforces code compliance.
Investigates non compliant problems and makes recommendations for corrective action; communicates and collaborates with developers and other individuals to address code violations and make changes; performs follow up work and assistance as needed.
Creates accurate and professional notices of violation; takes photographs and gathers evidence while performing inspections; issues citations and responds to citizen complaints.
Educates and provides information to citizens, developers, and the general public; interprets laws and regulations while educating public on laws regulations and code standards.
Drafts, maintains, and edits documents regarding inspections, code enforcement activities, and code violations; creates and updates service requests appropriately tracking work assignments and progress.
Oversees, trains, and provides professional development opportunities for lower level officers and subordinate staff; provides quality control over inspection and code enforcement activities.
Travels throughout the city to perform inspections and address compliance and code violations; testifies in various hearings and trials for prosecution of violations of Dallas City codes and zoning regulations.
Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education
High school diploma or GED.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience interpreting and enforcing codes/ordinances, investigating code violations and/or issuing citations.
License and Certification
Valid driver's license with good driving record.
Must have current license as a Code Enforcement Officer issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Preferences
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to testify in court and deal effectively with the public.
Basic PC skills.
Critical thinking, problem solving, diplomacy, and tact skills.
Spanish/English bilingual skills preferred, but not required.
Supplemental Information Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of inspection protocols, policies, and procedures.
Ability to determine code violations and suggest corrective action.
