Job Summary This is a full‑time, exempt term position lasting 12 months. Vanderbilt University Medical Center Post‑Graduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Informatics Residency program is a 12‑month, full‑time residency, accredited by the American Society of Health‑System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the PGY2 Pharmacy Residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. The mission of the PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency is to transition PGY1 residency graduates from general practice to specialized informatics practice that meets the needs for informatics services and ultimately our patients and providers. The resident will be involved with active inpatient and outpatient services which includes multiple levels of system build and informatics clinical decision support. Graduates are well equipped to be fully integrated members of the informatics team, and able to contribute or make recommendations in a fast‑paced environment. In addition, graduates are experienced in short‑term research in pharmacy informatics, excel in their ability to teach other health professionals, and possess the experience necessary to exercise leadership for pharmacy informatics practice in the health system. This residency will tentatively begin on July 1, 2026, with one residency position available.
Key Responsibilities A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. Didactic discussions, reading assignments, case presentations, written assignments, or direct patient care experiences will allow the pharmacy informatics resident to understand and appreciate the implications of areas including but not limited to understanding the role of informatics in improving patient safety, evaluate technology integration in clinical practice, assess the impact of informatics systems on clinician workflow, and participate in project design and implementation. Residents will develop expertise in informatics principals during the residency year. Residents will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and assist preceptors with teaching pharmacy students from the local colleges of pharmacy and with PGY1 Pharmacy residents from our own institution, along with an optional teaching certificate obtained during the residency. The resident will also provide didactic lectures to pharmacy students, as well as in‑service presentations to pharmacy and nursing staff. The resident will gain experience in giving formal presentations and will be required to complete research pharmacy projects with at least one process improvement project and manuscript submitted for publication during the residency.
