Animal Control Officer
General Statement of Duties
This position is responsible for educating the public on responsible pet ownership and overpopulation through rabies control, stray animal control, and enforcement of animal control ordinances. The individual will apprehend domestic animals, and capture, transport, and relocate wildlife as required. Also responsible for assisting with Code Enforcement duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
Duties/Responsibilities
Respond to calls regarding stray, lost, or abused animals, and take appropriate action to resolve the situation.
Enforce animal control laws and regulations, ensuring compliance through inspections and investigations.
Capture, handle and transport stray or injured animals to appropriate facilities.
Educate the public on animal care, responsible pet ownership, and local animal laws.
Work collaboratively with local shelters, veterinary clinics, and law enforcement agencies.
Document animal incidents, maintain accurate records and prepare reports. Perform related administrative work as needed.
Provide customer service to residents, through telephone, email, or in-person communications, to address inquiries and resolve issues.
Act as Code Enforcement Officer; enforce parking regulations and other Village ordinances as assigned by Chief of Police or his/her designee and issue citations as needed; direct traffic.
Required Skills/Abilities
Strong understanding of animal behavior and handling techniques.
Must be in good physical condition and able to lift, restrain and control animals.
Detail oriented with good organizational skills.
Must be able to deal with the public courteously and retain composure.
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
Basic computer and data entry skills essential.
Education and Experience
Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience working with animals in a professional or volunteer capacity preferred.
Knowledge of local animal control laws and regulations preferred.
Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
The annual salary for this position is $50,000.
