Field Safety Manager (Deputy) – Bechtel Corporation

The Field Safety Manager is responsible for implementing and maintaining Bechtel’s ESH programs across all project phases. This involves administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, contractual obligations, and Bechtel Core Processes, while fostering a proactive safety culture. The Field Safety Manager reports directly to the Project ESH Manager and oversees the Area ESH Leads within the designated geographic areas of the project. Work requires physical ability for field inspections, including walking on construction sites in extreme heat or humidity, climbing ladders and scaffolding, working at heights or on uneven surfaces, and entering confined spaces. Must wear assigned PPE (e.g., harness, life vest, gloves, etc.). The position is a part‑time telework role with at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Major Responsibilities
Establish, administer, and sustain a comprehensive safety and health program at the project level or oversee a significant component of such a program for large‑scale or complex projects. Ensure safety and health requirements are integrated into planning documents, design criteria, construction execution, commissioning and startup, operational plans, schedules, procurement, and subcontract documents. Prepare technical and regulatory reports and research issues to support ESH program execution. Provide technical support within the project’s ESH team and to other project groups to integrate safety and health requirements into project planning, design, construction planning, procurement, subcontracts, commissioning, and other functions. Collaborate with other project‑level functional leads (engineering, construction, commissioning, subcontracts, procurement, project controls, document control) to address safety and health requirements in their work products and activities. Monitor adherence to regulatory standards, contractual ESH obligations, and Bechtel’s Life Critical Requirements (LCRs). Use risk assessment and Bechtel's ESH Management System to achieve continual improvement of the ESH program. Participate in ESH emergency preparedness planning and confirm investigation and resolution of safety incidents. Other Responsibilities
Evaluate incidents and ESH performance trends. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, address their concerns, and collaborate with project leadership, subcontractors, and the client to achieve ESH objectives. Supervise project‑assigned safety and health personnel. Participate in meetings with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of safety/health requirements. Provide technical support and assistance to construction supervision and subcontractors in planning and executing field activities. Conduct assessments and inspections of project activities to monitor ESH compliance with contractual commitments, laws and regulations, and Bechtel requirements. Apply data analysis and trend information to improve focus and performance and prepare technical reports. Facilitate support for ESH team members, inclusive of all ESH disciplines. Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s degree in Safety Engineering, Occupational Health, or related discipline and 8+ years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in occupational safety, health, or a science‑related discipline and 10+ years of relevant experience; or an Associate's degree (or equivalent) and 12+ years of relevant experience; or 15+ years of relevant safety or health experience. Required Knowledge and Skills
Research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements. Proven track record in managing ESH programs for large‑scale projects; strong ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive safety culture. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and presenting. Proficiency in computer applications for presentations, data management, and report generation. Proficiency in OSHA recordkeeping standards and applicable compliance methodologies. In‑depth knowledge of ESH regulations and construction industry standards. Adaptable to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions. Ability to support multiple work shifts as needed and a wide range of tasks. Willingness to travel and work at project sites as needed. Valid driver’s license. Additional Skills
Interest, training, and experience in applied sciences. Ability to work in multicultural, multidisciplinary environments. Knowledge and experience with ISO 45001 Management System standards and certification as an ISO 45001 internal auditor. Professional certification (e.g., ASP, OHST, CSP, CIH) or progress toward certification is highly desirable. Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
