Job Summary Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, offers a $500 sign‑on bonus to Trade Trainee hires and an additional $500 relocation bonus for hires living 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. The position is designed for individuals with no trades experience willing to complete three weeks of unpaid training in the Pipefitter trade or those holding a certificate in a related trade field.
Our Marine Trades Training (MTT) program partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local community colleges, offering several course‑to‑hire programs at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA). The three‑week, 120‑hour program runs from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Responsibilities
Assemble, weld, and secure pipe systems on ships, including over 23 miles on submarines and more than 230 miles on aircraft carriers.
Read blueprints, fabricate, install, inspect, and test pipe systems.
Troubleshoot and repair existing piping systems.
Work in various weather conditions, extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, and small confined spaces such as tanks and compartments.
Qualifications & Requirements
Must be able to pass the 3‑week (unpaid) training program or present one or more certificates of completion or diploma in pipefitting or a directly related field.
Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screening.
Must pass a physical agility test and be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily.
Must lift at least 40 lbs and perform overhead work.
Must be able to work overtime as needed, at any shift, outdoors year‑round, at extreme heights and in tight confined spaces.
Must be self‑contained with a clean‑shaven face to wear a respirator.
