Company: Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII). Location: Newport News, VA. Position: Marine Painter Trainee (Trade Trainee).

Requirements: U.S. citizenship, full‑time, multiple shifts.

Relocation assistance is available and a $500 relocation bonus is offered for hires living more than 50 miles from Newport News, VA.

Sign‑on bonus: $500 for external new hires.

This role is open to recent or upcoming 2026 high‑school graduates with no trades experience or holders of a Marine Painting certificate.

The Role Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local community colleges, and maritime training facilities to offer a 2‑week, 80‑hour, unpaid Marine Painter Training Program.

Successful completion (or proof of a related diploma or certificate) opens the door to a full‑time position working on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines.

Responsibilities

Prepare and clean surfaces before coating, including masking, sandblasting, and surface inspections.

Apply marine coating systems using power tools, hand tools, and chemicals in accordance with SSPC SP‑1, SP‑2, SP‑3, and SP‑11 standards.

Work in diverse weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, or elevated platforms, and within small, confined spaces such as tanks, compartments, or voids.

Ensure compliance with militarily specified thickness requirements and interpret paint schedules.

Calculate surface areas and estimate required materials for coating projects.

Test paint grades, viscosities, and fineness to verify quality.

Perform final quality inspections before coating application.

Select appropriate coating application methods and provide suitable curing conditions.

Practice modern painting techniques, including powder coating, non‑skid surfaces, and other special hull treatments.

Qualifications

Must be able to pass the 2‑week (unpaid) training program or present certificates/diplomas in Marine Painting or a directly related field.

Must undergo a background investigation and drug screen.

Must pass a physical agility test.

Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily.

Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform overhead work.

Must be willing to work overtime as needed and any shift.

Must be clean‑shaven to wear a respirator.

Must be able to work outdoors year‑round, in all weather conditions.

Must be able to work at extreme heights and in small, tight, confined spaces.
